The canal not feeling right Mike and I decided to have a dabble at our local canal for a change, as we haven't fished there in a while. The day started rather bizarre, as we both didn't have the right feeling and I just couldn't get motivated (and that's not like me when it concerns fishing). Anyway, we had a little late start, as mum's taxi was required to get one of the brood to work, so we didn't arrive at the canal until 9.45am. The water looked somehow different, murkier then usual and a lot of loose weed, tree branches and other all sorts floating through the water. Still, we decided to give it a go and soon our gear was set up, I fished one rod on a maggot feeder, the other on a waggler float, bait used was bronze and red maggots, some groundbait, bread, cheese and small soft strawberry hook pellets (hoping the tench might take a liking to them). Being a bank holiday didn't make the fishing easy, as there was heavy traffic of barges and most of the time we couldn't leave our rods in long enough to get a bite. Needless to say, I drove Mike round the bend with cursing, swearing and stamping my feet every time a barge went by lol. After about an hour we decided to move to a different swim, as we didn't get as much as a nibble, nor were there any signs of fish feeding. Needless to say, the fishing went rather slow (for me anyway) Mike had a little more luck, although not a great deal more. Late afternoon and the barges disappeared and i was hoping to spend more time fishing, rather then just casting out and bringing the rods straight back in. Still, th fish weren't playing, all I got to show for a 9 hrs session is A gudgeon ![]() And what I believe was a roach ![]() Mike had 6 fish, 2 baby perch, one ruffe and 3 hybrid skimmers. No pics as his cam was playing up. I was very disappointed and I'm still wondering what going on the canal, it is ALWAYS productive and even in the winter months we caught bigger bags like this. Well at least is was not a totally wasted day, as I got another 1.5 points for the gudgeon ![]() __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving

Re: The canal not feeling right That is what fishing is all about, some days it is easy, some days it is hard, I wonder if the disturbance in the water had turned the fish off, the surface had no ripple and it was very mucky. Well, better luck next time.

Who mentioned Ruffe... LOL Better luck next time guys. It could have been the extra boat traffic that was disturbing the fish, or maybe they are tightly shoaled up for spawning. The K&A can be like that sometimes.... __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey...
