| Due to having a lot of work to do at home last weekend, I'd decided to give the fishing a miss. But having fought a losing battle with the weather whilst working in the garden, temptation got the better of me by mid morning Sunday .I loaded some gear in the car & headed down to Clivey pond, which is about 2 minutes from my house. As I arrived, the rain stopped & the sun put in an appearance. There were three of four other people already fishing there when I arrived, but on talking to them, I discovered that besides a couple of skimmer bream & a small carp, not much was being caught. I headed off for a quite corner of the pool that was sheltered by some bushes & was a real sun trap & proceeded to set up a pair of carp rods. The weather was great & for a while I was able to take off my coat & sit fishing in a tee shirt. Not bad for Febuary.... I baited one rod with a hair rigged Tutti Frutti boilie & the other with hair rigged Halibut pellet. I'd noticed the remains of last years marginal reeds moving as some Carp pushed through them, so I put my boilie bait tight up against them. To the pellet bait I added a disolving PVA bag filled with pellets & maggots & cast it to an overhanging bush on the island. Then I sat back & waited. For the first hour & a half, not much happened. I tried using a pineapple pop-up boilie instead. That did'nt work. I also tried using a pellet / maggot cocktail. Still no joy. Then I tried fishing some deeper water in the middle of the pond. This time I used a single hair rigged pellet with some Vanilla Creme paste moulded around it. The response was almost instant . A screaming run resulted in a nice little Common Carp of around 6-7lb. This set the pattern for the next hour or so. With five more Mirror carp comming in quick succession. Topped of by this fighting fit 11 1/2lb fish which gave me a real scrap & a few hairy moments as it tried to swim around the back of the island... Then it started to rain & get colder, & the fish went off the feed. So I decided to call it a day. All in all, a very enjoyable afternoon & definately better than working in the garden. Another bonus was that i'd also got some more points for team Moonraker in the species hunt. ![]() __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey... |
