| K&A Canal Warmit63 Experience 8:50am: There I am sitting in my car outside the tackle shop in Devizes listening one of best albums of the 80’s Marillion’s “Clutching at Straws” when I see Claudia and Mike appear, my guides to the Kennet & Avon Canal. 20 minutes later we arrived at the car park to the section of canal we were going to fish. As we started to unload our cars both mike and Claudia gave me strange looks as my mountain of kit came out of the car. They both had decided to keep it light and simple. No not me I have to take everything including the “Kitchen Sink” I recon it’s the ex matchman in me got take everything just in case! 15 minutes later I had arrived at my swim. Mike and Claudia decided to continue on up the canal, but to be honest my swim could have had a dead cow in it; I was not going any further. I must take leaf out of Mike and Claudia’s book and keep it light and simple. The canal its self was in good shape with light breeze blowing left to right. With my main stay of bait being pinkie and squat, I decided to fish the pole with a flick tip, as I was not expecting anything to big. {Yeah right} Firstly I put in 3 small balls of groundbait straight in front of me at 71/2 mtrs which was nicely in the channel. With fishing white pinkie on the hook I placed my float over the groundbait and to my delight a bite straight away which produced a small roach of around 2ozs. Next put in produced a lovely roach of around 8oz’s. Slowly but surely I produced fish at a nice steady rate, until the first canal barge came through. This slowed the fishing up as every time I fed with groundbait another barge would go through. As the day progressed I managed to catch some more fish for species hunt: 1. The world smallest perch 2. A Gudgeon As the afternoon wore on the bites became less frequent then suddenly out of the blue a good old fashion sail away bite, the problem was I fishing a flick tip and light rig with main line being 0.12mm diameter. I didn’t see the fish but it ran me a merry dance only for the fish to snap me up. Because the afternoon was cracking on I couldn’t be bothered to get my elasticated sections out so I just put another rig on to the flick tip top 3. For the next hour I caught a few more small skimmers and roach. When suddenly my float sailed away again, but this time I took my time and five minutes later I landed a nice bream of 2 1/2lb’s which I was chuffed with especially catching it on the flick tip. We all fished to around 5pm and I weighed what I had caught for day for which was 7lb A Good day had by all, and it was very nice to see Mike and Claudia again. __________________ Born to fish made to work |
