Weekend in Penarth

I decided to give Penarth a go for an overnighter shore fishing with Justin, Paul aka finger and Gary aka Dangler.

Around 3pm the guys arrived to pick me up in fingers transit van to head off to our destination, Barri(y) beach.
We arrived around 6.30pm, so we had plenty of time to have a couple of beers and to set up. High tide was at midnight and we started to fish around 9pm, constantly moving with the tide.
I chosen 2 hook flappers rigs, which dangler kindly tied for me again the night before. Hook size 3-4 as there was a good chance to catch a doggy (I wished lol)......
Loads of Anglers arrived shortly after to fish the high tide, so I thought it must be a good spot to fish.

Weather conditions started off to be pretty good but later in the evening/night it was beginning to blow a hulie and mine and danglers tripot went flying at one stage.
Sadly none of us caught anything so we decided to pack up around 3am to find another venue to fish.

After a short drive we arrived at the breakwaters and decided to fish it but had to wait until the morning for the gates to open, so we thought we'll have a nap to be refreshed for the morning.
Easier said than done, as fingers was the first to nod off and kept the rest of us entertained with his snoring lol....so we watched some fishing DVD's on fingers portable DVD player.

Couple of hours later fingers woke up, so it was mine and Justins turn to get a hat full of sleep, whilst Fingers and Dangler were so kind to start cooking our breakfast and some freshly brewed coffee.
After some sleep and filling our bellies, it was time to get ready for venue 2.

(noticed my NEW floatation suit? lol....Thanks Justin for a great deal)

The locals were really friendly and updated us on latest catch reports and giving us some tips as we set up our gear around 9am, again we had plenty of time before high tide (around midday), so we could watch all the boats going out fishing.....some impressive fishing boats there.

I decided to use the same bait and rigs, as the local Warden told me that we had a good chance for some bass there but changed to size 2 hooks later.

Here too, lots of anglers turned up fishing the breakwaters
View to my right

Again fishing started slow, the tide was coming in strong and kept moving our lines into a tangle, despite using a 6oz gripper weight. By then I was really concidering to give up shore fishing, all the times I have been out (must have been about 10 times) and never caught a single fish.

At one stage Justin and my line got tangled up, so we both had to reel it in, as doing so I have noticed that there was a fish on one of the lines and after a closer closer I saw it was mine....

YES come to MAMA....a wee whiting, not a monster but nevertheless my very first sea fish

Than around 1-1.30pm things starting to pick up......I had lots of knocks and nibbles on my lines but didn't manage to connect with the fish.

Next to catch was Justin....again another whiting...well done

Fingers and Dangler in the back trying hard to get a catch.

Around 2pm Justins line crossed mine again and I had to move my rod over his to reel another little whiting in

Around 2-2.30pm we decided to pack up to head of home as it would be a long drive.

Sadly fingers and dangler didn't manage to catch anything but it wasn't due to lack of trying........I would have loved for all of us to catch.......next time guys.

On the way back fingers had to stop to fuel up, when Dangler presented me with a bottle of bubbly to celebrated my first sea fish and to give me the boost to carry on.....THANKS GUYS...you a great!!

Ooops....Lee aka Jonah2....I did promise to dedicate the first one to you, for all the jiff you have been giving me in the past and I also said I'd dance on fingers van roof if I ever catch........WELL, I do keep my promise

THANKS GUYS for a great weekend!!!!

Flatfish will become famous soon enough
Re: Weekend in Penarth

Great report Claudia ,We started of fishing cold Napp(Barry beach)due to hearing many great reports in the local Sea papers ect but found out by the locals that it hasnt been fishing as well as anyone has been making it out to be and that a lot of them have been heading down south for there shore fishing .
Anyway A very busy mark with the whole bay full of Great Freindly anglers but with only two 1 lb plus whitting caught all night by all the anglers which was a bit disapointing for us all.
Baits used was Rag , Fresh Black Lug , Squid , Mack ,Razor , Crab and smelts

10/10 for us even sticking fishing there with the wind being as bad as it was as many anglers was packing up!!!
For about 2 hrs I had to put rocks around the tripod and hold the top to stop it from blowing away down the beach and was very hard to even tell any bites if any!!!
So we headed of Fish the breakwaters ready to fish for the morning.
Very busy place again with all the Freindly locals and at one point I counted 86 plus rods out and I only saw 4 fish caught all day plus mine and claudias , but been told be the locals that it has been fishing well for whitting plus Large bass up to 12lb have been showing but was told that it is better to fish more in the summer time but i bet you have to get there early of you what to find any fishing space as everyone was fishing really close to each other which cause a few line tangles as the tides was strong with the brage openning and shouting... ( Its was quite a eye opener to see the amount of anglers fishing there.
All baits used but I think Rag , Mack and sand eels worked best as We had some relly good bites on Sandeels
So pleased for Claudia catching her 1st sea fish with us as I think we all was getting a bit run down thinking what else can we do!!!! But thats sea fishing for you , next trip for me maybe a bit of course fishing

Thanks once again for everyones company and making it the weekend it was

Better luck next time for us all

and well done to Claudia getting of the score board and keeping to her promise by dancing on the van roof top parked next to a busy road with lots of people watching

Justin
