Re: Penn 525 supermag XTRA?? The Supermag Xtra gives you the choice of fitting extra rare earth magnets to slow the reel down. The extra Mags are two more that sit as a piggy-back on the two original central Mags giving a stronger field (they are not fitted, and are ready for you to fit - if desired). I cant see the point of slowing a reel down that much. It is like buying a sports car and never getting out of first gear, or buying a colour television - and only watching it in black and white! The frame is the same as the Supermag, and has a gold coloured handle. There is a fishing shop in Hartlepool (the one closest to the sea), I asked what the difference was and that is what they told me, and they had it for sale 3 weeks ago - and it was in stock. I doubt it is worth the "Xtra" money. You would be better changing the "Rocket Fuel" oil to a slower grade. I forget the name of this shop in Hartlepool, but it must be one of the best in England, and a great bunch of lads. I was looking at some new rod bags, and the missus said "you have one of those all ready", a big guy said in the shop, "Excuse me madam, how many bags do you have"? I made a quick exit from the shop before she removed my fishing passes for the next year - I am still laughing now - and that is the first time she has been lost for words. Can anyone remember the shops name?

Re: Penn 525 supermag XTRA?? there's 2 new reels from penn, one is available now,the other at the end of nov,the out now is nothing more than a 525 slidy with the option of turning it into a super mag 525(something i was told by a staff member of penn was impossible, because they don't have the tooling to do it over here, strange but many people already have, including myself, with no special tooling needed!) since that day i am very sceptical where penn reels are concerned, sounds like market bull**** to me,as for the second,i dare say there are people capable of bearing out the claims made by penn, but i fear that too many anglers will be led to think that this reel has 'magic' casting powers and will lead them to the mythical 200yd baited trace cast, for most average anglers this will not be possible without first learning how to cast properly. i could off course be wrong!! on the note of new reels,i see okuma has joined the mag casting multi field, will be interesting, the reel claims a fast retrieve(more than the 525 i think)and is currently on offer for an interductory price off £60 squids!! __________________ species 07/codling/whiting/pollack/lsd/pout/

Re: Penn 525 supermag XTRA?? Eddie , a great post and how right you are !!!!, the new penn reel gives you confidence on a 200 yrd cast , but how many of us can actually do this ?????, like you say casting tuition is needed to gain this distance , but we all try , i actually like the smooth running of a 525 , or 525 supermag , so im looking forward to the 525 mag xtra , i still think the mag elites (abu) have a great smooth casting action , and as long as you treat them right , they will abide !!!!!!!!!!, cheers lee. __________________ If Everyday things are getting you down & stressing you out, Think like a Dog, If it cant be Eaten or Humped, Piss on it and walk away..

Re: Penn 525 supermag XTRA?? i am certainly interested to see how the penn reel which comes on the market at the end of this month compares to the 525's of today, apparently the internals are different from the current models i'm all for upgrades that make it easy for a novice to start using a multiplier, and if the reel helps control the cast until that person gains enough experience to move onto faster reels than that can only be of benefit,i do however dislike the way in which penn push the product, after all the mag extra is just a normal 525,supplied with a spare set of abec 5 bearings and a couple of extra magnets which you can fit yourself, which will then make it a standerd 525 supermag, anyone with the basic 525 slidy(excellent reel)can purchase a set of magnets including the cradle for £5 inc p&p,i find the bearings in the slidy just fine. i have never used the mag elite, although i have thought about buying one to compare(until the price went up)i have also been informed that none of the top caster's in the country use penn reel's,apparently most use abu's or similar, how true this is i do not know, but if correct then it speak's volumes. __________________ species 07/codling/whiting/pollack/lsd/pout/
