Going fishing without fishing.....

Snooze buttons on alarm clocks. Don't cha just love em? Who the hell came up with the name "snooze" anyway??? Is anyone seriously trying to tell me that they can have a decent "snooze" in the ten mins of lie in that is afforded to you by these damned machines? In my way of thinking, a proper snooze is measured in hours not minutes. Ten minutes would only give you enough time to get into the right frame of mind for a snooze, let alone complete the main event... If it was up to me I'd have called them "denial buttons". Denial of the fact I've got to get up soon and denial of any decent sleep from here on in...... Grrrrrr.

As you can probably guess, I’m not a morning person, so I wasn't overly impressed when my alarm went off at 05:20am on Sunday morning. Being in the semi comatose state I reach every morning, I hit it with a well aimed shoe and went back to sleep. Of course, the damned thing kept going off every ten minutes, and so it wasn't until I'd "snoozed" several times that I remembered that it wasn't work which was calling me from my bed, but fishing.

6:30am ticks round, and I'm standing in Budleigh car park wishing a slow and painful death on my alarm clock. I hadn’t really noticed the weather as I was packing the car, but standing on the beach it’s quite apparent that the wind is blowing and blowing HARD. Massive waves are crashing ashore, and if it wasn’t for the urge to try out my new toys, I’d have turned round and gone straight back to bed.

You see, I’ve entered the brave new world of fishing with multipliers. I’ve recently purchased a Grey’s Orion Mk2 13’ rod and an Abu mag elite to go with it. (Thanks mate, you’re a star!)

Although I’ve had the rod for well over a week now, I thought it best to try my first ever cast with a multiplier during day light hours when I can see what I’m doing, and not fumbling around on a dark beach like a pair of randy teenagers with a bottle of cider.

And so the plan was formed. I would pop down to Budleigh before dawn and do a bit of plugging/ledgering for Bass until it got light enough for me to start my training with the multi.

I very quickly ruled out any chance of plugging. I reckon if I’d have cast a 10g plug into that wind, it would have been blown back on to the beach before touching down.

So ledgering it was. I set one rod up with a whole squid, and lobbed it out into the Otter river mouth. It took about 5 minutes before I realised this wasn’t going to work either. There was so much weed about that my rod rest had been pulled over twice and I’d had to retrieve my lead from half way up the river!

I decided to pack my gear up and just wait until it got light. Gear packed away, I’d just sat down for a ciggie when the heavens opened and I got soaked. Was this a sign…..??

Eventually, it got light enough and so I set about my first ever cast… Magnets fully on and drag tightened up, I didn’t bother with a rig, just clipped a plain 4oz lead to the shock leader, and very gingerly lobbed it out into the surf….. And it flew!!! Of course I nailed my thumb on the leader knot and burnt it stupid thumbing the spool before the lead landed but most importantly of all, no birdy!

I spent a good ½ hour just casting out and retrieving. Nothing serious, only 50 yards at a time and only once did I have anything which could be called a birdy, and that pulled straight out anyway.

So all in all a pleasing session. Another couple of those and I reckon I’ll be ready to fish in earnest with my new toy. When I come to practice next time though, I’ll try and do it during the afternoon!

Rich.

Re: Going fishing without fishing.....

nice read. i used my first multiplier a few days ago, i'd say they are better than fixed spools... smooth, more distance, and its quite fun throwing around a weight with a multiplier.

Dunno yet Steve... I've not fished with it yet, and I've only had a few casts with it as well....

It *looks* very good propped up against the wall of my garage....

I'll let you know when I've had some fish with it.... (so in about 2008 then!)

Cheers,

Rich.

Re: Going fishing without fishing.....

Well Rich you certainly are a dedicated man, at least you have got a feel for the new gear. I think I would have sayed in bed and dreamt of that large Bass on the new gear!

Well good luck when you do get some Bait on the end of it all and look forward to seeing the pictures.

Interesting read Rich, shouldn't be too long 'til you're launching leads further than the eye can see
