Exclamation Mackerel

Don't let them maccy go to waste!!!

During the boat comp on Sunday we really whacked into the mackerel all day. I reckon we probably caught close to 100 of the little beggars. Gus even caught one on the link on one of his booms (now there's skill). And they were taking some huge baits.

Anyway, back to the point. We used a lot for bait in various forms, fillets, chunks, flappers and whole maccy on the bottom and smaller strips on bream rigs just off the bottom. But there was still a load left when we got back to shore. I took home 40 mackerel, gave six to the neighbours and the rest were beheaded and betailed (did I just invent a new word?) and stuck in the freezer, we had maccy for dinner tonight and it was delicious just salted, grilled and lemon squeezed on top.

So my point is, don't catch maccy and leave 'em behind. If you catch 'em, use 'em! we've got enough for another 20 dinners - how much would that cost in the supermarket? And I'll keep some for bait when the maccy become more scarce.

Maccy is underrated!

Eat it, freeze it, smoke it, bbq it, use it as bait, DON'T WASTE IT!!!!!!!

'Nuff said

Re: Mackerel

Nice post mate!

It makes me mad when i go walking along the arm and you see dead macks just sitting there dry where the people have just left the small ones after catching bigger! why dont they take em home for bait as you surgest or even eat the small ones? I cant imagin how many go to waist over the mackerel season down my way!! i would just like to add.....I dont even take mine home myself!! as the local shop is fairly cheep for them and they take far to much space in the freezer but i try and catch fresh the day i need them!

anyway i hope this thread is taken serious!!

Re: Mackerel

My sentiment isn't 'Save the Mackerel'

My sentiment is catch the mackerel, cook the mackerel, eat the mackerel, use it for bait.

I'm saying it tastes every bit as nice as the more prized fare such as bass and bream.
I'm saying it's a super versatile bait
I'm saying it's not cheap in the supermarket
I'm saying it's very easy to prepare for dinner
I'm saying it's easy to freeze and use as you need it
I'm saying don't dismiss this lovely little fishy
I'm saying LOVE THIS FISHY

Has anyone seen my beer?

you're right, they should do that or put them back, better than leaving them dry up on the beach!!
