Re: Trawlermen....BBC1 i havent watched it all but i did see tonights and last nights and it was great but i do have to agree with richard alot of fish killed there for no reason other than trying to catch a prawn!.. although a boat hook trying to grab a dan buoy attached to a prawn trap in those sea's looks a scary thought to me! __________________ fishing for fish is not as simple as you may think!

Re: Trawlermen....BBC1 They're piloting snibbies, I'm from Hull originally and most of my male relatives were trawlermen. They'd go to sea on an old sidewinder, spending a week steaming to Bear Island, a week fishing and then a week steaming home. They were classed as share-fishermen and although they worked for major companies, the first thing that came from the catch price was the boat's expenses. I've lost count of the number of times that I've seen them "settle in debt", i.e. their stores bill added up to more than their share of the catch. The "old" trawler owners of Hull & Grimsby were responsible for the intial rape of the seas, when they had depleted the North Sea & Eastern Atlantic, they set their sights on waters off Africa, New Zealand & the Malvinas. Other countries saw what they were doing and followed suit. Having lost two cousins and one uncle to the sea, I really do appreciate what is involved and the price that may be paid. It doesn't detract however from the fact that commercial fishing is continuing to rape our oceans and commerce will not be satisfied until there is nothing left to catch. Fishing Lyme Bay & Chesil, even I could cast onto the decks of some boats at times. ![]()

Re: Trawlermen....BBC1 Brilliant series but what dissapointed me was something that I didnt know went on in the trawler business. I knew that they had quotas but this series focused on catching prawns in the North Sea and the North Atlantic. The thing was, they were catching more fish in the prawn nets than prawns. There came a time when they had caught their quota of fish but still hadnt filled all the boxes with prawn. That meant that any fish they caught from then on would get thrown back.....probably dead and there were still three or four days fishing left before going home. So really, even though they had conservation in mind when they brought in quotas there was also another underlying reason and that was to keep the price down. Thereby slaughtering tonnes of fish by throwing them back dead just to keep the fish markets happy. Surely there must be a market somewhere for them rather than just throw them back.....what a waste. __________________ Andy. ------------------- Treat each day as your last, one day you`ll be right.
