I Can Cast!!!

Hi everyone i have been down the beach to practice my casting today armed with some info about off the ground casting. When we got to the beach I almost gave up hope because there was a gale blowing sideways down the beach but baitcaster wanted to still try so off i trudged. I had read about this south african style which involves getting a drop off about 6-8ft (which is much more than i would use) then imagine a clock face. I had to put the sinker at 4 and the rod tip at 1 then stand and cast at 6. I got my self into position and decided that i wouldn`t put any power into it and work on technique. First cast flew through the wind past my usuall 80yard mark! WOW! It went straight and my reel didnt blow up! Full off confidence i reeled in and tried again paying extra attention to what i was doing with the same result. I then tried putting more power in it and proceded to jurk in the cast resulting in an overrun! Lesson learnt! Baitcaster cottoned on to what i was doing and found the same results! I then decided that if i couldn`t power into a cast i would loosen the breakes off and risk the usuall birdie i get. It flew miles and I heard my reel open up which was music to my ears! I recon i am at 150yds so tommorow i we are going down the beach again and i am going to crack this cast! I am also going to take a load of rods to see how they all pan out including baitcasters 15ft shimano rod and f/s! Let you all know how i get on.

p.s anyone with any tips please post it will be realy handy

Cheers all

Re: I Can Cast!!!

well done Bluesbro....if you want a little friendly advice on casting, here's a little tip.

There is no 'text book' correct way to learn. Obviously there is certain criteria to follow, but no set standard. The most important thing to remember when casting is to be COMFORTABLE...If you're not comfortable, you'll have problems...If someone tells you, you are doing something wrong like, the rod should be here, your right arm pointing here etc etc - if you're not comfortable, it aint gonna work...

Sounds like you're doing fab anyway...well done

Re: I Can Cast!!!

if found with the south african style itr can destory your bait as you drag the lead round to the casting position so be carefull just a warning, but wel done took me ages to get the hang of that

Yeah I was gonna ask about that. I have only been chucking a plain lead out to sea at the mo ( With great delight ) and wondered about the bait flying off during cast. Sea angler says that if you use bait shields ect and put the worms on carefully the bait will be fine in theory. If the trace has to be laid out on the beach then surely that will dislodge the hooks and leave them flailing about in the air mid cast?

Im gonna keep practicing as I feel that i have just aquired a real skill and then go back to see a casting instructor to see what points he can give me.

Anyone any solutions/comments on the bait problem above? Also wondered if it will be hard to addapt this cast into a pendlum or is that a different kettle of fish alltogether

Cheers for the replys lads

Joe

I use an OTG 'layback with good results but have the same problem with clips coming undone, 2 ways I have overcome this problem to a certain degree, a large bait shield with the large hook 'hook generally holds it all together but something using a cascade swivel - like a pompey rig - easily comes unclipped - so I try to use my own style pendulum and again seems to work reasonably well, but I guess to keep it all clipped down succesfully - a full blown pendulum cast is needed - but - remember often distance is not the end all to catching fish ! I have caught lots close in

Re: I Can Cast!!!

pendulum is good for keeping bait on and cliped
as long as its smooth, i have found a well done smooth cast will even hold on delicate baits for long distance without clips
clips are best though
just remember nto to snatch at it, reduces birdies as well
not that im really any1 to talk

Re: I Can Cast!!!

Cheers Lads
I ain`t done to sad with my limited casting so far so I not to bothered at the mo. The only problem is that when the cod come in the winter most of the beaches I fish supposedly need a fair lob to get out amoungst them (Minster beach, Gravesend) I hear that them breakaway leads are good at holding/releasing the hooks so I might give em a bash as I have tried the big old bait shields and found that they don`t release properly! Either that or I am doing something wrong!
