Long or Short Rods?

Hi all just wanted to know if anyone has had a crack at these new long rods and fixed spools?

My old man went out and brought a 13ft suveran xp whilst on hollidy for £80 with a 1 1/2 ft reducer making it a monster. Obviously we were itching to play so we went out the warren in folkstone and i found that it puts an extra 50 yards on my cast with half the effort! I usaualy use a twelve footer with my abu ctc3 Rocket on it and due to the fact i have no casting technique i can only average about 80 yards with it (My casting instructor gave up on me!). Now i can get past 100 yards no probs. Any of you big casters put a long rod through its paces? When you are serious casters do they give you anything extra?

I think I might go and buy a K2 cos the abu it a bit on the heavy side for my liking or would this be a bad idea?

Also if anyone else knows of any good casting instructors in Kent i would love to hear from ya!

Cheers all

Re: Long or Short Rods?

Stick a fixed spool on a 14-16ft gruavel(think thats how you spell it) or a similar rod loaded with 12lb line and nothing will come near it.

The thing is there not ideal for all fishing situations, fine on clean weed free beaches but you still need to have something a bit more robust in your bag.

Re: Long or Short Rods?

although mine are not for sea fishing i can relate to the longer rod
i have a set of E S P 12ft 9in vertex distance 3lb test .and when you have got used to the difference in the length on casting they are horizon spankers (love that comment ) but they do have a draw back and this does not affect casting while sea fishing from the beach but on some lakes that are surrounded in trees and the swims are tight and the trees over head on the swims seem to make casting a 12 ft 9in rod very difficult .

tightlines

erm dont fish under tree's?

yes the longer the rod the easier you should be able to compress it.. so im led to believe anyway! so therefore it should go further!

Re: Long or Short Rods?

i have recently brought a 16ft K2 and its great, a simple over head thump gives me the same sorta distance as pendulum casting with my zippy
its a real beast to get used to though
and like gullyworm said, its not ideal for all situations, its to big for close fishing
i am yet to have a good fish on it but bite detection seems good
the only problem i have had is its very top heavy, even with a reel on and i found it gets ppulled over very easily

Re: Long or Short Rods?

Yea i can relate to the top heavy side of things but i just put it down to the rod being genraly heavy. Why does no one put a multiplier on one? Does it cause over runs? Am just worried about using fixed spool as i don`t think they are as robust!

Re: Long or Short Rods?

i am gonna try a multi on mine soon, i think the same as u, especialy as my only fixed spoil is an old used and abused cheapie which is starting to fall apart
would much rather put a penn on it

I've never had a prob. w/durability of a fixxed. I got a Zebco thats at least 23 years old. Got it for my first trip Salmon fishing in Idaho. Dont get to to Idaho very often so its been on Catfish duty since. Both my cat rods have fixxed spools.

I've also got a 16' Crappie/Perch rod, Love it!! Its a horizon spanker too with just 1/4oz. or so. If its too close I'll use it like a cane pole, still love it!
