I'm looking to a little pier fishing this summer (good weather, calm seas), and I wondered if any old rod will do. I've got access to anm 11ft carp rod but I've asked in the local shops and all I get is buy this emourmous beachcaster and multiplier. When I was a kid I used to use a 6ft boat rod and didn't have any problems. So which is it, go for cheapness, borrow any old rod and have great time, or spend all my money and have the same great time? Any thoughts will be much appreciated. John.

Re: What Rod? For pier fishing, use your carp rod, 6 or 8lb line and float tactics. You'll have a ball Rob

Welcome to the forum. I see that you live in the west midlands, so i'm assuming that you dont do too much sea fishing. I would imagine that a Carp rod would be ideal for the odd pleasure session from a peir. It should be OK for float fishing or lure fishing & even light ledgering. Just take care not to overload it. I would guess that you could use a lead up to about 3oz & if you fish mackerel feathers, cut them down to about 2-3 feathers. Mackerel or Garfish should be good fun on such light gear as should other commonly caught peir species such as Pollack or Bass. In fact I believe that many Bass & Carp rod manufacturers probably use the same rod blanks. Good luck __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey...

Re: What Rod? Thanks for that, and thanks for making my mind up. I think fishing is a little like cycling. You can have the most basic ofgear and still have a great time. I look forward to chatting more on this forum. You seem to have a good bunch of guys here.

Re: What Rod? Hey Happyheth....got a real name? I've been sea fishing for more years than I care to remember and, as my wife is often reminding me, I have more rods than she has shoes (must count them to be sure some time!). my favourite rod out on the boat after bass is a carp rod, 10ft, 2 1/4 lb test curve. great fight and you can feel eveything. even mackeral give you a good time. go for it!!!! Cheers, welcome to a great forum and stay safe, Jules. P.S. get a drop net though....that fish of a lifetime is out there somewhere. __________________ born to fish....forced to work
