Maddies, what do they catch?

Hi guys, just discovered a place that I can get harbour ragworm, or maddies without too much effort. My question is what species am I likely to catch on them? Will it generally be what would take normal rag baits, or something more specific? Any replies, as always, greatly received.

Regards, Darren

Re: Maddies, what do they catch?

hi mate!!

great bait for lots of fish but id say there best for golden grey mullet and you can also use them for a baited spinner for the thin lipped mullet! good flounder bait around my area and also pick a few small bass up on them and not forgetting sole! all in all there a good all round bait mate!

Hope that helps a little

Ollie.

Re: Maddies, what do they catch?

Cheers guys, as always prompt and useful. We get loads of mullet in Seaton harbour, don't know what sort, but you mentioned a baited spinner. What sort of spinner would you recommend, and do you just put a couple of worms on the treble, cast and retrieve?

Regards, Darren

Re: Maddies, what do they catch?

flatties are the main target. but i've had many other species on them including dogs, codling and bass. they do tend to attract the smaller species of round fish, an excellent scratching bait for matches.

they are effective fished in bunches of 6-10 or using 2-4 to tip off rag, lug or crab. i love the things, but they're hard to find decent size/ quality ones round my way now.

Re: Maddies, what do they catch?

Hey mate i normally use a small flounder spoon and change the hook to a small treble and put 2 maddies on each shank, cast and retrieve, but when you get a knock be careful if its a thick lipped mullet you can easily pull the hook out if its only lip hooked.....!cheers lee.

Re: Maddies, what do they catch?

For the thin lip mullet mate i tend to cut the hook off a small spinner and tie about 3-4 inches on line from the bottom and put a small size 8 hook onto it baited with 3-5 maddies, use light gear and trot it round the tide using a bubble float!

hope that helps mate.

Re: Maddies, what do they catch?

like everyone has said flounder love them,in fact most fish do,they can't resist that wriggling mass flowing in the tide.
i have had a lot of fun , in summer months on the piers at dover dropping bunches of maddies down the wall on french boom traces and catching pollack and scad ,in fact i think it is my favourite sea fishing method
