Crab traps up the river......

Hiya peeps,

Was just wondering if anybody around my area is interested in going half's on some traps up the river adur in shoreham as i haven't got the time to check them as much this year and they need to be done every few days to benefit from them! Will only be for the run up to the smut meet so if your interested give me a pm and we can sort something out

Used to have loads up there a few years back but they got pinched and moved by someone else so it will be starting from scratch again!!

hope to hear from someone soon

Ollie.

your not wrong about it being great mate.....and to be honest it not just helping me out it helping whoever helps me out cause if we can get 100 odd traps up there then we should be able to get around about 150 crabs each in under two weeks if we time it right and theres only two of us.

Re: Crab traps up the river......

i've just put some traps down somewhere in my area and have found that 4 inch diameter pipe cut into short lengths and sunk into the sand/ mud is an easy way to trap. and best of all, all my pipe has come free of charge from a skip.

i'll let you know how effective they are when the crabs arrive.

Re: Crab traps up the river......

Any old guttering i use mate and i try to have them cut about 16inches long so they hold in the mud easier and don't get washed away with the flow of the river! have had a few lengths out of the skips around my area and being a builder can get my hands on more when i need it! makes sure you set them back down afterwords else your find that trap will be washed away by your next visit!! ive had people do mine before and they have left them up and next time i been up there they have either gone or sticking straight up in the air!!.....thats the que for me cursing!!! lol

Rob......Gonna try get some nice beach crabs for the smut meet for you as i feel they will fish a bit better then the rivers

Re: Crab traps up the river......

We say traps but they don't really trap as the crab could get out anytime they like but it just gives them a a home they thinks safe for a while.

All the crab traps are is pieces of old guttering cut into about 16 inches long and you just stick them into the banks of the river, best thing to do is get as many as you can and make a long line along the bank as when the crabs are due to peel they look for hideaways by walking up the bank to get into the holes or under rocks and anything where they can hide out for a while. So placing these traps half way up the bank gives them less far to go and gives you an opportunity to find them more easily! all you have to do is walk the bank and check each trap by lifting it up and running your hand down to the back of the hole to see if your lucky!! always replace your trap else it will wash away in the tide.

If you go up the river some time mate your see them sticking out of the banks, if theres no one around go and check them out if you get the chance!!! I'll post a pic or two when i get round to getting up there!!

Hope that helps a bit mate!

Greenheart.......sorry but im not sure yet whether i can get enough but nearer the time if you still need some and i got enough i'll let you know!!

Ollie.
