whimbrel is on a distinguished road
cornwall

i used to sea fish in my youth (NE coast and NW scotland). i have not done so for many a year but I am going to the Padstow area of Cornwall at Easter and see it as an opportunity to start again. My tackle will be rudimentary - any suggestions of what to do to rekindle the old bug. In particular is there any chance of flatfish in the Camel estuary (Flounder Spoon?) or boats from the harbour.

Re: cornwall

I used to holiday in Padstow with my parents way back when......In my younger fishing days, it was more of a hit and miss affair and I just used to enjoy sitting on the rocks in the summer waiting for the inevitable twitch on my rod tip. That rarely happened as I never really discovered the bottom fishing marks. I could only go where my dad would take me really.
Having said all that, we did find some good spots. My Uncle caught a 9lb Bass on light spinning gear using a home-made silver wobbler. That was in a place called Harbour cove in the Camel estuary. Just around the corner in Harlyn bay I caught a 4lb Bass float fishing a soft back crab 3ft under the float and loads of Garfish. There is a point at Harlyn Bay called Cataclews Point we used to fish with a string of feathers from there. I caught John Dory(believe it of not) polack and mackerel. .......Great fun on small light gear. The only fish I can remember catching on the bottom was a strap conger from the same point (and loads of spider crabs....huge things). There was a guy who lived near the beach there just above a place called Boat Cove, his name was Eddie Plym, he and a few of his mates would work a seine net in the bay. Whether you agree with netting or not, and I dont, they used to get some cracking Sea trout, bass, plaice, mullett and all sorts of different species. Never saw them caught on rod and line though. If you should go wading in the rock pools for Peelers, beware the dreaded weaver fish, theres quite a lot of those around.
Unfortunately all that was in the summer and very little help to you wanting info on fishing around easter......Good luck anyway.
