Re: making weights

Have just read this thread and hope you haven't started yet.

Whatever you do, and this is really really important, make absolutely sure the mould is bone dry.

If molten lead comes into contact with the tiniest bit of moisture it kind of explodes which is never a good thing if human flesh is around.

I know I'm sounding boring but welders gloves are good too.

I used to make lead weights and no one told me about the moisture thing, I found out the hard way but was lucky.

Re: making weights

Thats another reason to use hot moulds it prevents moisture , always heat your moulds before pouring the first lead.

Talking Re: making weights

oveously you couldnt get it off a roof, too high
i think lead is quite expencive if you wanted to by it so it kinda defeates the object of making you own and you may as well just buy em
you could try the s**** heap, or a reclaimed materials place where they have all old bricks and roof slates n stuff
or if you have a neighbour you dont like just get the ladder out when they go away and give them a nice sky light

Re: making weights

Been making my own for ages, bought all my moulds from DCA Moulds, use the 150grm and 175 grm beachbombs with breakaways, I'm fortunate that i get access to plenty of lead (see crimewatch for details). The one thing i have found is to keep the mould very hot and burn a candle under the two halves of the mould to create a sooty coating to prevent any sticking. I use a standard welding earth clamp to secure the mould before pouring, if you decide to quench the hot mould in water before removing the casted lead make sure the mould is heated back up and all traces of residual water are expelled as molten lead on water creates blowback bigtime(see hospital watch for details) not wanting to sound too nerdy its always advisable to wear goggles and gloves and work in a well ventilated area (see lungwatch for details).
Hope this has been of some interest
