Match Angling I've seen a few reports on here lately of poor results in matches and was wondering if this is a nationwide problem. Matches in the Newport / Cardiff areas that I see results of in the local papers have been won generally with 3 or 4 fish and weights of about 5lbs max. ever since I started taking an interest in them about 2 years ago, I'm not sure if they were better than that previously. However, this winter they have been even worse and the most recent result I saw was one by the only angler weighing in with a single flounder and only around 1lb in weight. Is it a particularly bad year or do you all think this is a sign of things to come? Like last winter things started promisingly in the channel with early reports of cod but they all seem to have gone away again. I haven't fished the sea in South Wales for more than 6 months and judging by what I'm seeing I'm not sure it is worth bothering! ![]()

Re: Match Angling match fishing is a funny thing. alot of poor results are down to the venue, date, tide, etc picked in advance. so if the venue is going through a poor patch, weather's not good, not a perfect tide, etc you can't just change the match venue and time. i do like scratchy matches, prob cause you have to work really hard to find something that works, and you get a great feeling when you manage to temp one onto your hook. if you're a good match fisherperson then you will be able to catch a fish weather the fishing is poor or out of this world.

Re: Match Angling The Amble Open - fished up here in the north east on Sunday just gone, was won with five codling for 25lb. 1oz. In that bag, the guy had an 11 pounder and an 8 pounder - but he didn't have the hsf - that was won by a guy who had a 13 pounder. Also the heaviest flatfish prize was won with a flounder of over 2lb. So, in answer to the question - it's still worth going out - up here anyway... Paul

Re: Match Angling Glad to see the fishing is still good in some areas. To be fair the match reports are never brilliant for the Newport area, I hadn't thought of the fact that people may be catching a lot of under-sized and therefore unweighed fish. The area is generally hit or miss anyway but I think my next trip will be to Exmouth to get me a wrasse and pollack for the species hunt as neither of them are caught in my neck of the woods, fancy a cod but they are few and far between here.
