what do you do with your fish?

this might be a delicate subject as there are alot of different views by different people but here goes-

what do you do with your fish? mainly if they are deeply hooked and can't be saved and how many of us take fish home( how many, what size, what species, etc) ?

when i go fishing if there is an edible fish that is sizeable and is too deeply hooked to be saved i will take it home to eat as if it was me who made it die then the least i can do is eat it. any fish that i catch i see if they can be unhooked without death, if not i will kill it instantly with a sharp blow to the head so there is no suffering for the fish while trying to get the hook out.

i don't really take many fish home these days, out of choose i will only take dab , as they are quite abundant at the mo and very tasty. possibly a few codling if they are there in large numbers (keep 1 out of 5). and i'll take mackrel and gars for bait.

several times in the past i get remarks about putting back bass, cod, sole, pollock and even dogs. usually by the older generation.

many juniors that i help coach understand about fish stocks and encourage others and preffer to practise catch and release. a credit to our sport and good signs for the future.

Personally i don't take any fish home apart from when i plan the go garing and i may keep a mack or two! I have seen far to many small fish taken home and even had a word or two with some anglers but hey....peeps have there own views and i can see this thread getting many of different views!

Re: what do you do with your fish?

All my fish go back unless they are blown from wrecking

Its just my thing plus I must be one of the few anglers who has spent soooo much money on catching fish yet does not like fish to eat

Re: what do you do with your fish?

In the past ive taken large amounts of cod,i remember myself and my brother inlaw taking about 9 stone of cod each home from a boat trip.
I wouldnt do it now and feel quite ashamed having taken so much.
I do take fish home to eat tho as i like it,Whiting if big enough get taken home,if i catch a few Bass one or two will be kept.
On the whole i release most of my fish as who wants to eat a 4" pout?

Re: what do you do with your fish?

Hi Folks,

If the fish is big enough, i.e. if it will provide a meal for two people when filleted, I take it home for the pan, otherwise they go back.

Regards

Drew

Re: what do you do with your fish?

Anything caught thats big enough is taken home and eaten, not many though as we cant get to go fishing as often as we like due to shift work and distance to coast, but the kids love it when we get something, is'nt that what it's all about ?
