cod rigs?

going up north to our house in whitby later in the week and wanna get my 1st cod from the shore, aint sure if i should be going for bit baits on big pennel rigs, or little baits on flapper rigs
i guess i am more likely to catch a little coddling but surely i will still get them on big baits as well
any help would be great thanks

Re: cod rigs?

A lot depends on where you will be fishing Ben,clean beach/pier or into the kelp.
If its off the pier or beach i would fish two rods one with numerous small hooks,on the other i would fish a larger bait for the cod,you dont need huge hooks on your pennel tho 2/3 0 are plenty big enough.
Good luck Ben and happy new year for the weekend.
PS Wrap up warm ive just spoke to my dad and its bitter with a freezing snowy north easterly up there

thanks for the advice, just been checking the forcast and it is gonna be cold, very cold, tides aint great though, HW about 4 on saturday i think

if you fish heavy line(35lb) straight through, no power casting though. using a pulley rig incorporating a weak link (i would advice the breakaway or tony's tackle sea match link system) then use cheap, maybe second hand leads.

then even if you lose 10 new leads and no rigs then you'll only use £10. if you do fish the kelp then BIG crab would be a good bait with mussel, squid, yellows, etc to bulk out the crab as you a " tight git". LOL.

maybe look through back issues of sea angler if you've got some, there must be something in there.
