Braid Fishing Line - what's it all about then?

I keep reading about braid and how superior it is over mono, but having looked around and asked for advice from tackle shops, the question still remains, what breaking strain of braid to use for the following situations? I can't seem to get a consistent answer.

For all-round beachcasting with say an Abu 6500 size reel

For all-round spinning with a fixed spool reel (again over rough ground and maybe along the side of piers over sand and shingle)

For all-round boat fishing (inshore and mid-channel wrecking) with a Abu 7000 or 9000 size reel on 20 and 30lb class rods.

Also, do you still need a shock leader on a 20lb braid if you were trying to cast 4 or 5oz? Again, some say yes, some say no due to the superior strength of braid.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Paul.

I SOULD PUT ON A SHOCK LEADER ON YOUR BRAID LIKE YOU DO MONO FOR THE SAFETY ASPECT OF IT.

I THINK IT WOULD BE THE SAME FOR THE WEIGHT YOU ARE USING.

I DONT THINK YOU UDE THEM ON BOAT FISHING I NEVER AHVE UNLESS U R CASTING

On the boat or in a tide run braid rules

Braid is basically very thin compared to mono - thus you can load more line and it offers less resistance in a tidal flow (stop the bow that mono gets in stronger tides)

As it does do give you feel everything that is going on down below

As Steve says you need to use a shock leader as braid does not give and casting with out it will result in snapping on casting

Braid does cost a lot of money compared to mono

I only use braid of the boat but that’s because that on my reel

Cheers guys, shock leader duly added.

Richard you're damn right about cost. Luckily I have a friend going to florida next week and she has a shopping list from me

Get this, Power Pro braid, 300 mtr $18, Storm Thunderdog lures $3.28 and an Abu 6500 CT for $58 Do we get ripped off in the UK for everything or what

when casting a lead off the beach, you should ALWAYS use a leader, no matter what line is on your reel!

Always remember, SAFETY FIRST...

I always put a backing of mono onto my small multiplier reels if i'm gonna use braid, as I find that the braid can 'dig' or 'cut' into the spool, but find that casting mono from the shore is far more superior than braid, mono seems to flow from the reel nice, but, braid tends to come off too 'heavy' thus no good for pendulum or power casting...

leave braid for lure fishing, and the boats, and generally stick to mono for beaches..

Also, braid tends to give you 'false' bites from the shore, with no stretch, each wave tends to give you a 'bite'...

braid also cuts into you if you aint got a levelwind

and goes all crispy if you dont take care of it and all sticks together

seen this happen on 1 reel but this was only really far down the spool
