Re: travel rods?

Ben I will admit to not knowing a thing about traveling beachcaster rods, but I do know stuff about traveling rods. I own two freshwater travel rods. Bother are telescoping, and the telescopers tend to be more affordable than the segmented rods. I believe that overall, they are a little less strong when compared to one or two piece traditional rods. I did use my freshwater traveluing rod, with some small success, for saltwater fishing. It was a sound, and a small catch, but it was fun. For a good quality one, expect to have about 50 to 75 quid (minimum) saved up. I got my cheap freshwater jobs for $5, and $20 (two and ten quid).

By the way, I did manage to get my six foot (2pc) Octane easily stored for a seven hour car trip in August. I disassembled it and lay it accorss the floow of the van diagonal unser a seat and to keep it in place, I put a rug/ blanket on top of it. I removed the hook to not skrew up the interior., Of course I know in UK you guys don't have vans and SUV's like we have here (from what I understand the taxes (dash and MOT) would be outrageous?).

Glad to see im not the only traveling rod fan!

I have the fladden maximus, its a bit of a chunky beast but as not a main rod does what it says on the tin, cost only about£30(ebay) breaks down to 6 pieces in hard tube for a 12ft beachcaster
I know smoothy has the penn one, tried at oddicombe in january its the buissiness

for spinning etc just got the fox travel spin 9foot, 4 piece rod and its the dogs dangleys

Cool Re: travel rods?

Hi Ben,

I have a couple of Penn Jetstreams. And as Dave says they are the Dogs wotsits.

Tommy A's dad bought a Fox or Shimano travel rod for our trip to Ireland and It looked fine.

I know that Jetstreams are a bit expensive but......you can cast a fair way with them as they remain pretty stiff. They come in a hard rod tube nicely presented as you would expect from Penn products. I have taken it on quite a few trips on planes etc and put them in the hold and they have withstood a fai amount of punishment from Airlines.

I hope this helps.

Oh the hardest thing to find is the travel rod rest that is of good quality and does not collapse at will!

So any budding businessmen out there there is a niche for a product like this.

Re: travel rods?

Ben,

The one we have that Smoothie mentioned is fine for the average man like myself or the old boy !

However I used Smoothies spare Jetstream and they are very good indeed with a very nice carry case. Only problem you get is when you cast you tend to loose the weigfhts - well Shaun did anyway .............

Re: travel rods?

leaning towards the penn, purely because i want to be able to do big casts with it and heave in some huge lumps of weed
and you get a "free" 525 supermag and you can never have too many reels

Re: travel rods?

at the moment
can get more distance with the normal mag rather than supermag
but then i could have 3 penn 525's

Re: travel rods?

Ben,

You probably know this, but some of the mail order companies will sell you the PENN rods only, for about 100-120 pounds less than the combo price.
