on dark nights use starlights brought off ebay(have lasted 6 days!!!) with good binding of micropour to cover both ends smoothly
on moonlight nights as per this week etc now only use flouresent tape which is spireled up rod tiips does the job

Re: ROD TIP - LIGHTS (For Nite Fishing)

I like the chem-lights too. They're popular here w/catfishing after dark.
As for a white tip on a rod you dont want to bung-up, split a plastic drinking straw, if you can cut it in a spiral it seems to hold on better.

Re: ROD TIP - LIGHTS (For Nite Fishing)

I use beta lights in the 600 power, the kind the carp boys use in indicators for night fishing . They are approx 25 to 30mm long by 4/5 mm diameter ,I put them inside small bore clear heat shrink ,shrink it down and trim leaving 10 mm each side of the enclosed light and whip onto the rod over the 10mm end tags. They are highly visible ( but not as bright as an led ) , small and because they are in the heat shrink that will flex with the rod you do not get a rigid spot in the tip .They cost about 6 pounds but I've had one on an old Beach rod for 20+ years with no noticeable loss of power . All my beach rods have them on and I've never had a problem with line getting trapped as there is nowhere for it to catch aslong as the whipping is long enough to run off the heat shrink onto the blank .

It is interesting to 'see' how others make their own bite detecors for night fishing

Re: ROD TIP - LIGHTS (For Nite Fishing)

I was reading novembers edition of sea angler last night, came across a simple rod tip light from enterprise tackle at £4.45 inc postage , looks a nice design.
