Re: Tackle Shop Well in my opinion and to be honest Im only relatively new to visiting tackle shops but here is my thought - Great rappour and friendly service is essential. I go to Veals and the guys in there make you feel very welcome and I dont feel stupid if I have to ask a question ! That really makes the world of difference in my opinion. Secondly I guess its the bait issue - I do get pissed off if the bait I buy is naff so as everyone has said bait in the main issue really. Finally - Ive been saying it for a while - theres a great opportunity for a tackle shop in Chepstow - local fishermen have to travel to Newport or Lydney. Smoothy if you read this - lets go into partnership and open our own shop ............. Good luck Luke - Ill visit your shop next season mate. __________________ So near yet so far - Wembley 2008 - Zideered Right Up !

Re: Tackle Shop As the tackle shop is in Teignmouth you need to think about the tourist trade so some nice cheap rod / reel combos are good for the parents getting nagged by their kids. Are you going to be solely sea or will you stock coarse gear as well? No point in stocking a huge amount of rods and reels as they are the sort of thing that only gets bought occassionally. Bait is the thing that will bring people in to start, I normally only go to the tackle shop for bait but somehow manage to end up spending £10 to £20 on rigs, weights, hooks etc. so make sure you have a good stock of the little bits and pieces that everyone forgets on their trips such as end tackle and leads. I'm sure it's something you've already thought of but make sure the local charter skippers know about you and recommend you, you could do the same for them by advertising their boats. Some friends of mine opened a bike shop which soon had the previous bike shop struggling as they spent less time concentrating on the one off big sales of new bikes and concentrated on the accessories and repairs. Service is everything, if you offer good advice and are friendly to an angler just starting out they will return even if you aren't as cheap as some others. You have Trago Mills not too far from you who will offer cheap kit to people but they don't know anything about what they are selling and can't offer the level of assistance you will be able to provide. I would say concentrate on the low to mid price kit as with more expensive rods and reels people are more likely to shop around before splashing out. If you are selling a rod and reel combo for £40 and someone else is doing it for £37 it isn't so worthwhile the customers trudging around the shops as it would be if you were selling a rod for £180 and someone else is doing it for £150. Sorry if the advice is a bit vague, I guess the only way you'll know one way or the other what people want is once you've opened and you can work out the sort of market you are in. Good luck, when it's a success can you branch out to the Bigbury area please?

Re: Tackle Shop For me it would have to be: 1. Top quality baits. Enough said. 2. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. I've been confronted with some real unfriendly staff in the past. If I can have a chin-wag and feel relaxed, I'm more likely to return and spend my hard-earned dosh. 3. A discount for Forum members Rob

Re: Tackle Shop GOOD LUCK IN YOUR VENTURE LUKE. I TEND TO BUY QUALITY GEAR AS THE CHEAP STUFF DOES NOT LAST, EG, GEMINI, BREAKAWAY, QUALITY LINE, SUFFIX, ETC. I TEND TO USE THE EXISTING SHOP IN TEIGNMOUTH, BUT HE DOESNOT STOCK THE RIGHT GEAR AND IS OVERPRICED, THE SHOP IN DAWLISH TAKE THE BAIT (I CALL IT TAKE THE P*SS) ONLY CARES ABOUT FRESWATER FISHING AND IS NEVER OPEN. SO THE END RESULT IS EXETER OR PAIGNTON FOR DECENT GEAR. SO STOCK THE RIGHT GEAR, KEEP THE KETTLE HOT AND THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF US LOCALS CLOGGING UP YOUR SHOP SPENDING LOADS OF DOSH REGULARLY. BIG TIP LOOK AFTER YOUR REGULARS WITH TEA/COFFEE DICOUNTS OFFERS ETC AS THIS IS YOUR BREAD & BUTTER, REGULAR INCOME, MAKE HAY WHILE THE SUM SHINES WITH GROCKLES, ADDED BONUS. BEST OF LUCK. ![]()
