Crabs ...

Just a quick question for you guys n girls!!

I have just been reading on another forum that some anglers use normal hard back crabs for bait by breaking them open takeing the yellow stuff out and placeing it in something!! not sure what they place it in but they reacon it works like pealer crab! Have any of you guys tried this method or know of anybody who has and if so could you let me know what you think....like weather it works and does it fish half as good as fresh crab?

Many thnks

Ollie.

ps.....what is it that they stick the crab into?

Re: Crabs...

Hi guys 'n' gals. re hardbacks the best way to treat them is to use crabs 2-3 inches across before putting them on the hook remove claws and put on hook and just before dropping them in crack the top of the shell with the back of a knife to release the jucies and scent this works very well for smoothounds

Re: Crabs...

thnx gus!

but they honestly say that they use the inside of the hardback crabs by splitting them open and extracting the yellow (yolk) they may call it from inside and wrapping it in a mesh of some kind!! wierd but might work as the fish find the cent more than the look! sounds good to me but like you say the best way i find on using the hardbacks is to cut the legs off crack the shell and place on the hook like that! does the job down my way.

Just felt i hade to ask the first question to see if anyone had any views on it!

cheers.

Re: Crabs...

The only thing i can think that they use is the PVA bags that the carp boys use. But the only thing with these is that they desolve when in contact with wetness so you would have to be quick to bait up and cast out.
There is also another thing on the market but i cant remember what it is called and it is like a mesh bag that you can fill with mashed fish or crab. I will see if i can find it on the net again.

Re: Crabs...

Grind up the whole crab to a pulp, get yourself a sausage machine and knock yourself up a few crab sausages, different sizes for different species. Prforate the sausage before use. Good for freezing, nice presentation on hook, good for catching fish. I have used this method to good effect from different marks.Take along a stove and if it don't work then make yourself a few suasage butties.
A good way to make use of those unused blow lug and rag.

PS Dont tell everybody

Re: Crabs...

sounds good!! dont think the misses would like me keeping them in the fridge or freezer!!!

anyway heres another question on crabs(steve might know this) i have also read that a sertain famous angler freezes his crabs with the shells intact(henry gilbey is it) if so does it work very well cause i heard all he does is wait till they pop and freeze them like that! not even taking the gills out! sounds weird to me but if it works i'll do it!
