Sea Fishing

Of all the species that are caught in the seas around the UK, like the congers, dogfish and others, are they edible? I know the cod family, plaice, flounder and such are but am wondering about the others as well.

There is very little that you cannot eat but in the UK we have min size and if under back they go in

Mind you the ones you do not see in a shop means they are bland to taste hence no body wants to buy them

A Conger steak goes nice with a glass of white wine. Check the cold slab at the local fishmongers, if we don't eat it they will not sell it

Never eaten conger, dog fish, smoothhound, or any thing else for that matter from english waters.....whoops I take that back...I eat sole, plaise (SP) and flounder. Are the blue shark there good eating also

I have a great Recipe for cooking Conger ,given to me by one of my regulars......

Place conger in pan,take several nails and nail conger in place,add several pints of milk and herbs ,cover and bake in the oven for several hours till cooked.Remove conger from pan.........AND EAT THE NAILS.

I got the impression the guy wasn`t impressed with the taste of the eel...

Richard, We have those laws in the states too, for saltwater fishing, fresh water fishing, carbing, lobstering, and even some forms of big game huntring (such as deer in some places). Actually my state just doubled the minimum size a lobster needs to be to keep it. I know people who are into lobstering (recreationally) and they have had to throw back some pretty nice catches. The commercial fisherman are upset to, but I personally believe that this may end up saving their jobs eventually because there has been a dwindling number in Long Island Sound, so allowing the young ones to live should lead to a large population so someday these regulations can be reduced. If you are interested in knoweing how they expect somebody to measure a deer before shooting it, those states rely on number and appx. size of antlers.
