A question about interest of fishing among UK tourists going abroad Hi, please give me directions in my idea, is it out of mind or not ? I run some wilderness guide services in Lapland, Finland (you know, the place where Santa Claus lives, you have the reindeers, husky dogs etc.. ). It is only about 5 hours drive from here to get to North-Norway and Arctic Sea, which is never frozen and cods & coalfishes are hungry. There are thousands of british tourists coming here (er.. where? www.levi.fi) and i'm sure that there are quite a lot of fisherman too. SO: would it sound crazy / would you buy a program like this: Deep sea fishing for cod, halibut, sea-wolf, coalfish etc.. in Norway, surrounded by the most highest and most beautiful mountains of Scandinavia, 5 hours drive, 5 hours fishing, 5 hours drive back (or 5 hours drive, 6 hours fishing, overnight stay, 5 hours drive back). About prices: what would YOU pay when you are in a tourist resort and you would buy approximately 15 hour exhausting fishing trip to Arctic Ocean: 600 mile transport (on wide open roads, no cities, average speed 60 mp/h), on the way stop at some excellent quality knife makers & handcrafts, 5 hours fishing with chance to get the fish of your lifetime, proper guidance, good boat & fishing equipment with floating overall and full catering ??

Re: A question about interest of fishing among UK tourists going abroad I've done a few minutes ice hole fishing in Lapland. Personally, I would love to do something like you describe but wouldn't be able to because of the family but I know cod fishing trips to Norway are becoming extremely popular with British anglers because the cod are much bigger there and there are far more of then as cod stocks in Britain have dropped hugely. Having said that the only possible problem is the amount of travelling. 10 hours driving is quite a lot (how long would it take on the boat to get out to the fishing areas on top of this?) and there are companies in Norway offering the trips which wouldn't have so much travelling involved.

Re: A question about interest of fishing among UK tourists going abroad When I used to fish off Miscou Island, New Brunswick, my travelling time one way, was 21.00 hrs by road, of which I did all the driving. If I had ever looked upon the driving as a bore I probably would never have gone again. We returned many times to the same area, making many friends and enjoying the fishing. I find English folk get into a bit of a "tizzy" if they drive anymore than from here to the next town, so to speak, its a kind of phobia being coped up on a small Island, I guess! Five hrs drive in Norway, with fishing big cod at the end, Blimey go for it. best regards, Deepsix. ![]()

Re: A question about interest of fishing among UK tourists going abroad Sounds wicked to me - if I could persuade my wife to come along Im sure she would enjoy Lapland with her mate whilst me and my mate spent a day off cod hunting - five hours aint that much really. Price would of course be a major issue but I think it would be well worth it. __________________ So near yet so far - Wembley 2008 - Zideered Right Up !

Re: A question about interest of fishing among UK tourists going abroad Pross: Driving times from location to fishing spots with boat are normally under 20 minutes, basically you can catch fish everywhere but usually the best spots are shallow "tops" around 10-80 meters deep as the surrounding waters are often extremely deep. Yes, cod population is good in Norway, usually we get cod on the side as we fish more for wolf-fish or halibut, or large coalfish. Catches can easily reach 10 kilo for cod or coalfish. Halibut is rare, and biggest ones have weighted over 100 kilo this summer. Basically it goes like this: catch is 110 % sure. You always get something in Norway. Sure, you can get a fishing holiday to Norway straight from travel agent, but the idea here is to offer deep sea fishing for people that come to Lapland, but would perhaps want to do something else than ski during their one week stay, and also to offer maybe a chance of a lifetime trip to Arctic Ocean for one day or overnight stay. With a reasonable price.
