calling all gar fisherpeoples Think i asked this same question last year but hey ho hear goes again lol......... Im fishing a match in a couple of weeks and its going to be stacked full of gars, but the main problem is there normally about 100 yrds off the beach and not reachable with a normal float......so hears my question....I nead to make a bottle rig to fish at that distance so i can get out there with my strip and fishing just under the surface and not on the bottom! i used to use a float that pulls the whole rig off the bottom towards to surface but as years have gone past the bottle rig is the way to go.....hope you understand what i mean and any help would be greatfull...thanks for reading and i look forward to your views Cheers Ollie.

Re: calling all gar fisherpeoples Not sure if this would work or not but could you use a paternoster rig with a sliding snood and a stop knot set at the depth you want to fish? Not sure whether it would be easy to strike into any fish though Alternatively you could do what the carpers do and use a remote control bait boat!![]()

Re: calling all gar fisherpeoples lmao @ remote controll bait......dont think it would go down to well with the other 60 odd anglers lmao cheers for the sugestions guys been think about this and i think im going to have to go a few times to the beach and try diferent ways out......ie light line and a heavy cocking pike float or even a slide snood with pop u beads.....and maybe im going to have to try figure the bottle float out.....grrrr iv seen them use them loads of times but never got close enough to see how to make them! may have to stick to my old method my old method is to use a float with some tube atatched to the bottom with to cuts in to place the swivels for my snoods and the main line runs through the whole thing so when a grip lead is atached to the end i can cast and the rig will climb the line to what ever depth i put the stop knot but most of the time i over depth it so it fishishes right on the surface.....has worked for me the last couple of years but doesnt seem to keep up with the bottle float peeps....never mind least it bags me a few ![]() Cheers Ollie.

Re: calling all gar fisherpeoples Posted: Tue Jun 07, 2005 8:29 am Post subject: rigs,(more mad ideas?) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- hi all, dureing a tedious drive up the m5 early s'morning i got to think about rigs (again). basically usual 1 or 2 hooks clipped down ( bomber) and a 3rd hook clipped down but on a slidey float wi no stop ( mmmn, will it release? don't know but i'll try it.) so as it can drift back in with the tide/wind/waves from where i cast it. covering more ground than slideing one down the line after casting . if i get around to building it i'll test it wednesday @ milford/ hordle or highcliffe depending on how weedy it all is. bet some dutch guy has tried it already, Geejayy. _________________ hi flying fox, as you can see above i had this mad idea a few months ago. ( i'm prone to them ).after several prototypes things are improving though theres still a few problems to iron out, if youre interested in messing about with this idea post here and ill outline the latest version, prehaps you can improve on it. geejayy. __________________ beer so many venues, so little time.

Re: calling all gar fisherpeoples You could try the TFG extreme range surface missile. It weighs 45g and wih the right rod it can cast over 100yds. I use it on Chesil for Garfish with a lot of success. Where are you going to be fishing? Are you allowed to use ground bait. I find that the most effective way of keeping the Gar's close to shore and in the same area. __________________ Check my blog for a daily fishing forecast from Weymouth, Portland, Chesil Beach & Kimmeridge Bay. www.fishingtails.co.uk

Re: calling all gar fisherpeoples One setup I have seen but never used is to make up a float trace, the float trace then free runs on the main line via a swivel above a normal bottom fishing rig. This way you can cast a reasonable distance and fish both on the bottom and close to the surface. When you say bottle float, do you mean something like a bubble float which is partly filled with water? or simply an extra boyant float which will support a larger casting weight. Steve.

| Re: calling all gar fisherpeoples Ollie Try this one if it's not too deep, I use it for carp fishing but it also works well for casting a long range floating rig. I have got a bit artistic and drawn it on the puter, see below. Basically it is a breakaway lead with the line free running through it. Below the weight is a plastic boom with the trace attached, then a bubble float. Use this rig with the hook clipped up and use shock leader all the way to the float. When the lead settles on the bottom simply pay out line until the float appears on the surface, binoculars might be handy here. There is no need to watch the float as the rod tip will indicate a bite. When you get a take the line will pull through the lead and register on the rod. ![]() __________________ Portland Jon Anyone can catch 'em when they are there. | Re: calling all gar fisherpeoples there was an artical in SeaAngler magazine this month about adding a float rig to your bottom fishing rig to increase catch chances. I guess this would work for the extra distance. i have the artical if you want me to scan it and mail it to you. i havent tried it yet but it looks useable. |

Re: calling all gar fisherpeoples Some great info there thanks alot.....will be fishing at shoreham beach for the match and yes will probably be ground baiting Portland pirate at around the 80-100 yrd i hope...lol i say hope as im gonna try the same tactic as freshwater ie...half a bottle filled with ground bait and whacking it as far as i can and touch wood it will stay in the bottle till it hits the water lol will take note and give your ideas a go and hopefully i'll get it right by the match and i would be very happy if you could scan and send me that article island991 sounds good to me and at the moment im gonna give anything a try Geejay....would be gratefull if you could post and maybe it could be usefull to me and many others Great artwork jon.....god to see you put a bit mor time into yours then i did mine lol might be worth ago but not sure how effective it will turn out to be in water of around 20ft? will give it ago and let you know steve...the bottle is mainly used to suport a heathy grip lead and pops the rig up to the surface very easly think thats all i got to say at the mo.....sorry am a bit rushed as im posting and changing the subtrate in my marine tank at the same time ggrrrrr wont be doing this again i tell ya cheers Ollie.
