Hi, i'm booked on a bass fishing trip in mid October aboard Colin Penny's boat Flamer from Weymouth. I've not tried this before. Anybody give me any good advice? I shall be using a 20lb class outfit with braid. i.e. Baits (Can fresh mackerel still be caught at this time of year) Types of lures & rigs etc. What size weights will I need to cope with the tides here. ><))))),*>

Re: Boat fishing for bass Weymouth Hi Greenheart. October and November are the best months for Bass down here off Portland. In my humble opinion Colin Penny is one of the best skippers in Weymouth. He is certianly the best inshore skipper, so with a bit of luck you will get bored catching loads of Bass after a few hours and he might take you for some Bream fishing. Bass in October tend to be around 1-2kg with the odd 2.5kg fish, but one thing is for sure, they are plentifull. Tactics for Bass in October will be lures. They will take almost anything including feathers. Best lures I find are 4" Shads and mackerel paterned Eddystone Eels. Keep your rig as simple as possible. Depending on tides you would normally use 8 - 10oz running lead with a trace of 20lb Amnesia upto 8ft. Sometimes you need to use a shorter trace and sometimes a longer trace even upto 12ft. However the charter skippers do not like you using such long traces due to tangles when 8 or 10 people are fishing. When I have been out fishing with the comercial Bass fishermen, we often use 2 or 3 Eddystones on a trace. That can be very hectic and is not reccomended unless you really know what you are doing. I am almost certain the Colin won't allow you to use a rig like that on a charter. I normally have a couple of trips out for a couple of hours in the latter part of the year, but after an hour catching 20 or more fish I get a bit bored and go looking for something else. I am looking out of the shop window now and I can see about 20 boats Bass fishing Portland Race and the Shambles.

Thanks for the advice Portland Pirate, I,m really looking forward to this trip & have also heard good reports about Colin Penny & Flamer. My last trip was out of Lyme Regis on a boat called Neptune & was a bit dissapointing. Although I caught plenty of doggies & a few wrasse. The skipper did not take much interest & just sat in his wheelhouse all day. There were a lot of novices aboard using his gear. It was in a right state & not much good to learn with. Two guys had rods with the ceramic insert missing out of the tip ring & reels that kept jamming. Enough to put anyone off fishing for life!!! Must be quite frustrating for you to sit watching other people fish all day? ![]()

Well, it's the big day Tuesday weather permitting!!! Anybody got any up to date reports on the Bass fishing & methods off Weymouth this week. The skipper Colin Penny also mentioned that he may have a go at some Black Bream, so any advice here would be useful too.![]() __________________ One man's fish is another man's poissons http://www.deepsea.co.uk http://www.wildtrout.org
