Sea fishing Rod Licences ...

Just a quickie,

correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm under the understanding that you DO NOT need a rod licence if the river you are fishing is TIDAL.

My local river (Wear) is tidal quite far, and we have flounder and eel matches, but occasionally chub, and even sea trout are landed, but makes no difference to us as they are always measure and return matches anyway, and yes, we do count them, as they are going back anyway.

Strange one this I think, as I am a sea angler, hunting sea fish, in a river! not like a coarse guy could actually go out to his patch and accidently land a codling!!!

Went to Ireland once to fish a three day festival, and on one of the free days we went chasing brown trout in the local river, we went 40 miles inland, and my mate was really excited at the prospect of fighting a brownie, anyway his first cast resulted in, yeah, you guessed it, a FLOUNDER! honestly guys, 40 miles in land, and he found a flattie, us matchmen, we never cease to amaze!

Re: Re. Rod Licences...

i think your right on the tidal bit for licences. reference flounders and fresh water we have a flounder breeding area and it is where a river meets the sea so wether they are reliant on a less saline mixture for breeding I don't know, or maybe the river brings the food that the littles ones like but 40 miles inland is something else, maybe his GPS was out of action.

Re: Sea fishing Rod Licences ...

I know you need a licence to fish the upper river Hull and that is tidal,In a fresh water match a couple of years back one lad caught a 3lb Bass, not bad.
I think it depends on the river and local authority.

Re: Sea fishing Rod Licences ...

What I have heard from a river Baliff, well at least in the South Wales area, is that you can fish as far up the river as you want providing that you are:

(1) Using sea fishing tackle and baits
(2) That you are targetting sea fish

Re: Sea fishing Rod Licences ...

Same as i have heard for down my way phil!

Im probably gonna get myself a rod licence this year for when i go mulleting up the river as i normally catch a few carp and bream in the same session! and for the fact that i use a quiver tip and bread for bait and mainly fish freshwater tactics i dont fancy my chances of getting out of it!

best bet i reckon.....save getting a big fine if you catch the belief on a bad day eh?

Ollie
