Sunday -
jodan trip - 225 miles ish
Monday -
peterhead scotland and back plus lost of driving inbetween - 1100mlies
Then five days later -
down to Cowelly (spelt wrong to go bassing a- 200 miles ish)

Total 1450 miles in eight days - Iam I completely mad

So how far do you guys drive in a year to go fishing ??

I do not even want to think how much it costs in petrol ( even though I try and share a car )

Re: Driving and fishing

Thats a lot of miles Rich! I wouldn't like to estimate how many miles I do each year, most of it is to the coast and forum meets. I look at this way: I'd rather drive 100+ miles and meet some top blokes and do some fishing than stay in and do some DIY!

Re: Driving and fishing

Wow the gas bill!!! Are you going to rob banks along the way??LOL
The last time I heard a price on the news for you fellas was $6.00 a gallon. They were trying to soften the possibility of $3.00 per gal. this summer for us. Its about $2.25 right now.
The farthest I've ever traveled to fish was 1,200 miles. Shortly after High school I went to visit a friend and his parents who had moved to Boise Idaho. I went salmon fishing for the first time. I want to do it again someday, as I got royaly skunked(blanked) the first time. We could see Native americans just above a fork in the river where we were fishing, scooping them out with LONG handled dip nets. They still have treaty rights <read-no fishing regulations> and we(the public) couldn't go past the fork. Great Great fun the whole time! Thank goodness my buddies parents paid for my license's. My buddy didn't mention the price before I arrived. You had to have a year nonresident permit($50) to buy a Salmon permit/endorsement($25). The second time I brought enough cash for myself.
Good Luck and fish on!

I reckon you're about right at $6 a gallon mate. With the Native Americans (I take it you're not allowed to say 'Indians'?) are they allowed to keep their catches when you're not? Does this go back to the independence days?

Re: Driving and fishing

i face a problem when it comes to transport and fishing
my dad is york 5days a week every week in his car which has plenty of space for fishing rods
but my mums car (a brand new jaguar XK8 special edition) is only really a 2 seater and has no space for fishing rods so i kinda have to rely on the help from kind mates
1500 miles is along way to go though!

Re: Driving and fishing

I seem to spend half my life driving through work and do around 35,000 miles per year so it's got to the stage where a "quick" 2.5 hour trip down to Devon for a forum meet or something doesn't seem far anymore! Fortunately I have my fuel paid for .

Re: Driving and fishing

I fish matches all over the UK and into Belgium and Holland too... I dare not even begin to think what mileage I cover, cos if I did, I may not do it anymore, also I am usually alone too (sad git or what !! )

Usually the drive home seems a lot better, especially if I've picked up 500 quid or so! but, I don't do it for the cash ( I only spend it on going to the next match! ), but it does help keep the funds down. My best form to date was doing 3 matches in 3 days in 3 different parts of the UK, and drove home with just short of £1,900 quid in me back pocket!! I enjoyed that weekend as the fishing was really good too! It paid for a weeks fishing holiday in southern Ireland for me and my family, with a bit to spare...that was back in 1997 - and I aint ever repeated it since..

NO, not for me, I also say african-american & mexican-american or latino if I'm not sure.
As far as the salmon fishing in Idaho (its been tooo long ago)I think I remember you had to keep everything you caught...IF you caught anything. Something about fish mortality after the fight, etc. Spawning is the only thing on their mind. If you get one to bite, its literally an accident.
& No not that far back, 1800's or so.
