Fines.

I watched Discovery real time on Friday evening on the TV, the fishing programs run from 9 pm.
Well, during the program they went Bass fishing.... somewhere in the channel, and during the usual banter about techniques I heard them say the following.
Any one caught selling fish they had caught were liable for a £5000 fine and so was the person doing the buying. !!!
Worth thinking about eh ?
This does not apply to me by the way..... I never catch anything.

Re: Fines.

Not sure if I believe that statement about getting fined. Its not as though its a business or anything where you might have to pay tax and all that malarchy.
Ive sold shed loads of BASS last year to a local restaurant with no problems.
Its more of a nicety really, you know, a bit of bartering and the crack with locals.Thats what I like about Brixham, we are such a close knit communitity and so family orientaited.

Re: Fines.

The problem of illegal commercial fishing for Bass has become such a heated topic around the southern coast, that the commercial bass fisherman have forced DEFRA to employ a new team of fisheries inspectors. This team is going to be based in Weymouth, but will be responsible for all of the south coast. I can well understand the point of the commercial Bass fisherman that has to pay 10's of thousands of pounds for a licence only to have their catch de-valued by some guy selling it at a fraction of the price in the pub or local restuarant.
If you have caught more Bass than you need then release the rest that you catch.

Re: Fines.

This is a tricky one aint it....... I am in two minds about it, on the one hand I can appreciate that commercial fishermen have to earn a living etc etc, but on the other hand they remove them by the ton on a weekly or daily basis.
Whereas I .... in total caught about 30 lb of fish last year and they were all Mackerel that either went in the freezer as bait for this year or were distributed amongst friends and family who wanted them.
And before someone asks.... yes they were all over the minimum length. The national fishstocks have nothing to fear from me !
I just thought it was an interesting point to raise.... because I was blissfully un aware of this law, and suspect that others are too.
