Keeping Crabs ?

Right its time to ask you all for your views on the best way to keep your peeler crabs!
Im asking cause i have a fair few crabs now and im not used to having so many! so where is the best place to keep them what in with weed or without, water on no water? whens the best time to transfer them into the fridge if they aint allready in there and stuff like that! any views would be great cause i dont like to waist them and i want to keep them healthy! and is there any way of slowing the process of them peeling down after they have started? i hate having to use them or freeze them if i dont have to!!
Cheers.

Re: Keeping Crabs?

Yer thats what i thought! but i find it beter to keep them in a bucket with a damp towel or sumthing like that! I was just wondering the process from the river or beach to the time you use them to see if its any easier than what i do now! My main question really is.....can you slow the process of the time the crab splits to when it peels?

Re: Keeping Crabs?

hi guys.& gals we keep them in a bucket with just bit of sea water in about 3-4 inches and a great lump of damp seaweed. if we have a lot then we freeze some down for winter use we get some 2-3inch poly tubing and put them in putting a staple between each crab so that you get a strip of them if you do this in sixes they are easy to store. this is very cost effective as peelers can cost as much as £1 each in some areas. While I'm on about cost now that the macerel are in don't forget to start hoarding some in the deep freeze for next winter they too can be expensive, we put 6 fillets into a freezer bag, and again they store easily Don't forget my tip on d.i.y. blast freezing.
