Exclamation rig adive please

i have been having a bit of a problem with my rigs recently during casts
i use impact sheilds on almost all of my rigs now but during the cast the hook keeps on uncliping, thus defeating the point of the impact sheild
they always used to work at least most of the time
all the rigs are the same as befor but the only difference is i am using thinner line for the main trace body
im not sure if its because of my rigs or the strong winds i have been fishing in recently
any help would be brilient
thanks

Ben, how do you mount the impact shield? Also, what sort of rig are you using it with? What B/S diameter trace line are you using. I normally use 80lb, at 0.75mm and I've never had any trouble with them.

Do you have a crimp (or similar) and bead above the impact shield, so that you can be assured that the hook won't go slack during the cast?

I always think that impact shields are ideally suited to pulley rigs, but I tend not to use them so much if I'm just using a normal fixed paternoster.

I guess one final thing is, what sort of bait are you using? It's essential that it isn't so bulky round the bend in the hook so that it won't fit snugly in crook of the clip. Sometimes I've found them difficult to use when casting a whole small squid or similar.

Re: rig adive please

BS is either 40 or 60lb
even the pulley rigs which i was using today were uncliping some of the time although the main problem is with the portsmouth rig
yes i do use a bead n crimp above the impact sheild (how snug should it be against it?)
bait has only been a single rag worm on size 2 or 1/0 aberdeens

Hmmm, well, as to the tightness of the hook snood, I like to have any clipped line so that the hook length makes the trace line bow slightly. So you can use that to set how far your impact shield can come up the line on a rig with a fixed hook snood.

With a pulley rig, I can't see as it makes any odds, so long as the hook snood isn't longer than than the trace line LOL.

Can't really see why you're having a problem from what you're saying, especially with a smallish bait on a reasonable sized hook. Weird.

Perhaps it was the wind! I'm not sure I'd feel that confident with 40lb trace line, though - not if you're casting it with sufficient force to need a bait clip. I certainly wouldn't feel confident.

Are you casing pendulum, or off the ground?

Cheers,
JB.

Re: rig adive please

Oh, I dunno then mate, sorry - just for the record, though, I normally cast off-the-ground, and I don't let my hooks un-clip, just make sure there's a bit of tension in the line, and you should be fine.

Be interesting to see if you still get the same problem when you go down again, and it's not so windy!

Cheers,
JB.

Ben you need to use stronger line for your trace bodys,as john has said for any rig that is going to be casted with some force you need about 80lb line,40 is no were near strong enough.
Are you stopping the shield flying up the line by placing a crimp/stop not just above?
Also if youve only got 40lb line then the shield may be able to slide about to much.
As a rule i use 30-40lb line for rigs that will be just lobbed out,and anything else is 80lb.
Finally i stopped using impact shields a few years ago and now use nothing but impact leads,i think they are brilliant, the less crap on your traces the better.
Good luck .how you getting on with your new reel?

Re: rig adive please

i understand that 40 is abit weak and only afew of my rigs are made that weak, most are 60 and afew (1s for really lobbing for smuts etc..) are 70lb
i think the problem might have been not having hte bead n stop close enough to impact sheild, thanks
and the reel is the dogs b******s, i want another 1 but having abit of a cash flow prob at the moment(tryna learn how to drive is expencive) and it would mean a new rod to, gonna leave it abit untill i can aford a really good new rod and maybe the 525 mag will have come down in price
