Question Mackeral hooks and materials

I'm going to tie some mackeral feathers and apart from using feathers I'm going to try using strips of silver foil from PG tips etc.

What's the best hooks to use and which size ??

Any suggestion please; for materials or patterns for the best fly??

Cheers Fluff

Re: Mackeral hooks and materials

I used size 2/0's when I made my own, but that may be too big, or small I'm not too sure.

Cool Re: Mackeral hooks and materials

Hi Fluff,

When I make my own lures I tie them with holographic mylar tubing on size 1/0 hooks.

Basically cut a length of tubing 1/2" longer then the hook shank, tie it in at the eye, then whip finish. Take the thread to the end of the shank nearest the bend and tie it in there as well, again whip finish. Tie in some red thread back at the head again and build up a large head or you can slip on some red rig tubing and super glue it. Tie off then give it a couple of coats of varnish such as Hard as Nails nail varnish.

Then go to the end of the tubing and unpick the last 1/2" overhang.

Job done......these lures "Fizz" through the water and outfish all other flies for Mackerel.

Have fun.

Re: Mackeral hooks and materials

Thanks for your very quick responses - hope I get the mackeral that quick

The pics of your flies Dan look good and you obviously went for purple . What are the beads for - are they an extra attracter ???

Smoothy - that fly sounds brilliant and easy to tie. Youv'e come up with some good info again. Do you tie it on a long shank or ordinary 1/0 hook ??

I'll be off and buy some holographic mylar - have you tried a smaller version 'lure bashing' for trout?

Cheers - Fluff

Re: Mackeral hooks and materials

Looking at them again, they look pretty naff, especially the way I've attatched the hooks. But, I used the beads as an extra attractor, whether it works or not, haven't got a clue...

I added bits of foil from crisp packets too for the top hook (but you can't really see from the pic)

Re: Mackeral hooks and materials

Will do Jack, but I think beads are better for flatties, and the shiny stuff attracts the mackerel, someone else will know a bit more I'd of thought

Hi Brett,

Glad to see you had a good day at Eastbourne and you caught some of those South coast "large mouthed mackies"

Perhaps the mackies in Wales have smaller more genteel mouths - like the people

Take care - Fluff

Re: Mackeral hooks and materials

The silver foil wont last 2 minutes after its caught a couple of mackerel.
It will tear and come off in no time. For the sake af 99p whats the point of messing around with making your own, ....go on then tell you enjoy making them and its not all about the money...lol
