Hi PixyB,

Yeh - I will tell you I enjoy tying flies.

If you want to believe I do it because I'm impoverished; that's fine by me.

Gonna get your money out and buy a financially challenged person a pint or two when we meet ?

There is nothing better than making your own traces/rigs/flys!! To catch a fish on something that you have put time and effort in gives your self a sense of pride!!!!

Re: Mackeral hooks and materials

I enjoy making my own rigs too, but don't always have the time. I wouldn't however even contemplate trying to make a set of maccy feathers for a couple of reasons. Firstly it would take me ages and it would probably drive me mental. Secondly, I couldn't make as good a job of it as the ones you can buy. Thirdly, I could use the time to make loads of other rigs and fourthly like Pixy says, they're only a quid, less if you buy a few sets.

Hey Andy - you could save loads more time and a shed load of money!
Go to your nearest Asda, Morrisons, Tesco etc to get your fish

Take care thou - visiting those stores can drive you mental - stick to fishing

Re: Mackeral hooks and materials

Hi folks,

Easiest way for Makerel traces is a 2 - 3 - 4 or whatever snood paternoster with 4" hook lengths and number 3/0 or whatever hooks you want. Cut up several lengths of crisp packet foil or wine box foil 1.5" X .25" and before each cast/drop i.e. if you are charter fishing attach the foil to your hooks one or two bits, its entirely up to you. No need for fancy feathers etc. it works every time.

Cheers

Drew

Hi Jack,

Long or short shank, it makes no difference really. Its the type of lure...ie. Silver like bait fish and the "fizz" that makes them work.
I have tried a smaller version for trout and they do work, on the right day, especially for fry feeding fish.

Its funny isn't it....we finacially challenged people like to tie or make our own flies.... must be something to do with our upbringing
