Re: Summer nights down south

Conger start feeding better - Mackerel fillets, flappers or whole squids (Breakwater best and near hopes nose)

Pollock - Rag/Lug (feed more at night) (everywhere)

Bass - Spinners / lures

Mackerel - No need for rods/reels. Just chuck an empty piece of string out, you'll still catch 20 a throw (everywhere)

Garfish - Mackerel strips on float (everywhere)

Mullet - Bread (Torquay marina/harbour good spot as well as the nose)

Red Mullet - Rare but found in/near rocky areas. Worms work best

Wrasse - Peeler crab lovers then worm munchers - Anywhere fairly rocky. Breakwater and Oddicombe do really well.

Bull Huss - Deeper waters. Berry head and Elberry cove good places to hunt

Black Bream - Same places as Wrasse using crabs & worms

Scad - Same places and same baits as mackerel

That's all I can think of for now.

Are you kidding about the string? I've heard of it being done with freshwater eels because the fibers get caught in their throat, but thats with bait tied on...

quote me if i am wrong ...

but i have always been led to believe wrasse are one of the only species of fish (certainly in our waters) that actually goto sleep at night red mullet if you know how to fish hopes nose for certain species i know a cracking spot for red mullet down there and if you know where what used to be called the ray pit off the end of haldon pier is you can catch red mullet there too (no rays in it any more though ) oh and mackeral after dark...
try and find somewhere (princess pier is the ideal place for me to discribe) with a light that lights up the water... if you walk right to the very end of princess pier there is a light lighting up the wall of the pier (you need to look down the wall to see the light) i think it is there to show boats the wall so they dont hit it ...but anyway! pick the right nights when macky are around and you can actually see the macky in huge shoals on the surface eating all the small fish that are attracted to the light. through past experience i have found that a spring low tide around 1am is the best time to see this it doesnt seem to have the same effect on a high tide... maybe the light is too bright on the water then? i dont know
