Skerries forum boat trip 4/5/05

Hi Guys,
I was just wondering what rods were going to be used for the boat trip,I just got my new Odessa Bass rod today and think it might be a bit stiff (and long at 11.6) for flattie fishing from the boat.
I'm tempted to order the Odessa Flattie, has any one got one of these and if so what do you think?

On the other hand I've got the Diawa Z uptide so I could use that if push came to shove.

At the end of the day we're all gonna have a great day but I wanted to get an idea of who was using what.
Cheers guys.
Nigel.

Re: Skerries forum boat trip 4/5/05

Hi Dave,

Personnally I think the carp rods might be a little too sensitive or else I would have a go with mine, mind you if they can bring in huge carp then I dont suppose a couple of flatties will be a problem.

I dont really want to take a shed load of rods with me so the choice has got to be made on land to save space.
I just dont know.
HELP!!!

Re: Skerries forum boat trip 4/5/05

Not long now guys

Must admit if I was going I would take my 2lb carp rod and a 20lb boat

What is the tide like on the day ? As if it is ripping through and you are needing to use 8oz leads then this is going to affect what rod you will be using

What rigs are you going to use ?

Your right about not taking loads of gear for the boat trip as space is never great

mmmm.... sounds a great trip out , wish I was coming

Re: Skerries forum boat trip 4/5/05

Well I think I might have it sussed out now.
The new rod which came yesterday (shakespeare Odessa Bass 2-4oz) was a bit stiff so its going back tomorrow and Ive re-ordered the shakespeare Flattie rod rated at 1-3oz so this should do the business, its also about £13 cheaper which is a bonus. If its any good then I might even treat myself to another one making the pair.

Over the years you hear that shakespeare are not well known for their build quality in rods and especially their reels but to be honest the rod I recieved yesterday was great. The build quality was just fine, the only thing I felt could have been better was the last eye (not the tip) could have been a slightly smaller diameter, apart from that I had no problems with build quality or fittings.

I've always gone for the top end of the market with brands such as Diawa and Cono-Flex but from what I see now with shakespeare it looks like their quality is catching up a bit.

Thankgod. !!!
