I haven't tried using a feeder, but i have thought about it, i guess because of the shape of the feeder it's very prone to snagging, so would only work over clear ground. What might be best would be a closed end feeder stuffed with mackeral, that way all the juices leak into the water around the bait, but the only piece edible to the fish is the hook bait itself. It's certainly worked for me when chub and tench fishing.

Has anyone tried this?

Smoothie used a feeder to great effect when we had a flounder bashing trip on the Tawe a few months back. Caught more than anyone else but it was an estuary so, as you say, on a rougher bed it may get snagged a lot.

Use an in line feeder near the lead and its the same as normal fishing over rough ground.

I have experemented a lot with feeders for sea fishing last year and they do work when used in the right conditions and tides.

I also agree that we have been brainwashed by tackle manufacturers that we have to be like tournament casters and be able to cast 180 yards plus to fish...but most of the time except in places like Chesil and the like we are actually casting over the fish.
How many times have you caught good quality fish close to shore.....?

Maybe we should take a leaf out of the continentals book and fish light and small closer in?

Smile Re: Using Freshwater Kit for Sea Fishing

I recently had the oppertunity to go saltwater fishing for the first time. In fact it 2x now. Once at the Southern Delaware coast, Atlantic Ocean side. The other was in Long Island sound, in Westbrook, CT. I don't own any salt water kit, and against my previous beliefs I used freswater kit for saltwater fishing. It worked ok too. I ended up finding freshwater and saltwater not so different. If you know how to handler yourrig, that's whats important.
