Time for a new rod n reel, but which one??

Well I have got some money coming in a few weeks so I am going to treat myself to a new long rod and reel.

Been looking at 2 Rels either the Penn Surfblaster 8000 OR the Shimano Navi 8000, both look like tastey reels that will last but I am leaning towards the Shim because a have read a few reviews, some people have been knocking the Penn brand as they have been having reliabilility issues with there Reels(clutch problems seems quite common). I must say I found this supprising as the Surfmaster 750/850 seems bulletproof?

As for a rod I want a 15ft Minimum size so have been looking at a Diawa Theory (16ft) and the Grauvelle Technos.

I dont hae a massive budget to spen so wondered if anyone had any ideas/suggestions?

Cheers

Joe

Re: Time for a new rod n reel, but which one??

I bought a Teknos 4500 X (silver) and K2 Titainium when I started (both around £150).
I now have a second K2 (this one rung for multiplier).
Must admit to prefering the K2, I think the Teknos would handle a large fish better though.
The K2 has more delicate bite detection IMO, hence I have a BIG fish target rod and a tiddler bashing one.
Not sure if they make the silver "X" rod anymore - haven't seen one advertised anywhere.

I teamed them both up with Penn Surfmasters, 1 of which I stripped the gears on pulling for a break after a year, I replaced it & have just replaced both the roller bearings which were sounding a bit rough. My only problem with them now is the weight and size when on a long walk to the mark.

Hope this helps

Yes indeed Spahill, I know what you mean about the quality of the K2 series, I have a K2 Red Metal Twin tip as my other rod but I doubt I can find another in my price range. I shall have to have a look and see what prices the K2`s go for now, must be old stock (and cheap lol) as the whole range were sold to Penn I was lead to believe?

Re: Time for a new rod n reel, but which one??

Yeah nice John, good to se they are well within my budget.

Think I will get myself another K2, read a few reviews about the Diawa Theory and it didn`t get many kind words lol, I shall more than likely get a 15/16ft Blue Metal, softer tip action but I spend a lot of time fishing over clean ground so think it will do fine.

Now to decide on a reel??? Shimano is looking good but I thought they were now being built in China, or was that ABU?? Are new ones still quality does anyone know?

Cheers
