Re: Line twist??

''I normally have a bucket that can be filled with water, sand or pebbles and it stands under the tripod and the tripod hook is connected to the bucket handle with a roof rack bungee but running about over xmas I emptied the boot of the car and forgot it. Still, means the reels got cleaned eh!''

damn good idea blanchie

Re: Line twist??

Yea using the bungee means it doesn't matter about getting the height right, if you had a bit of cord instead of elastic bungee then if on a soft sandy beach and the legs dug in a few inches the cord would then be too short to keep the bucket tight, likewise on a slanted beach. Also rather than having the bucket hanging it sits on the ground but its anchored and under tension. Its annoying when stuff is hanging off the hook and the wind makes it swing about giving the tripod movement. I usually use sea water in the bucket as its handy to have water to dip your hands in after baiting up but the best use of the water is to dip your leads in to wash away the sand from the grip wire slots on gemini & breakaway leads. If anyone fishes the type of beaches where you have to drag your rig over sand will know that the sand will clog up the slots and make resetting the grip wires a pain in the arse. Its dangerous to go down the steps and get water when I'm fishing the sea wall though so I'll use some big pebbles or sand on these occasions. The bucket is just like a big bait bag when walking from the car, I just use it a kind of bag/carryall, carrying all bait and flask etc in it. Cable tie one side of the handle hoop though so that when you put the bucket down the handle stays upright. It really annoying when you have to put the bucket down to re-adjust your gear etc and then have to stoop really low to reach the handle thats fallen to the sides of the bucket again. When its time to go home the rigs I've been using just get dropped in the bucket and I'll sort them in the comfort of home. I know lots of anglers hang thier lantern off this hook but in my opinion this is just about the worse place to hang your lamp, it gives no light to your rods at all as the lid on top of the globe blocks any light going upwards and being as the lamp is under the rods if on the tripod hook, you need light going upwards.
The shock leader/weed trick I described that I had to use the other night works really well if you can tie a leader knot quickly, saves a good 5 mins per cast and using 2 rods as I was on a 5 hour sesh those extra 5 mins add up to a significant amount of extra time that your bait is in the water and at the end of the day thats what its all about. Just have some nail clippers in your pocket for fast clipping off the old leader knot. You need to clip both sides of the knot so the weed will slide off both line and leader without any knots to snag the weed. My ready baited rig is already attached to the spare leader and the leader is wound onto an empty line spool and held down with a laccy band, tie on unwind the spool and cast out, sort the weed off the old leader and bait it ready for next time while your rod is out there fishing and the bloke on the next peg is still picking weed off his line. Dead easy and fast, hope this helps!
