casting aid

has anyone used the breakaway cannon as a casting aid, to reduce possible finger damage and help with power casting ?

I have been looking at the advantages, but is there a downside ?

here's the link : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BREAKAWAY-...item5d314da216

would appreciate any feedback, thx

Re: casting aid

Looks ok for casting with an egg whisk ,if you want to "power cast" ,a multiplier is a better option ....

Re: casting aid

Hi Chris,

Just come across your post.

The first and only question is how do you attach it to your rod? I think that will answer your question.

Any gizmo that is attached to your rod with sticky tape is a no go, salt water and sticky tape don't mix.

No idea to be honest

but why not try the reel first...lots and lots of people using fixed spools without the issue of finger burn.

You only need to start looking at finger protection once you are over the 100 yard mark and then can be easily sorted out with a bit of tape round the finger or a broken finger protector.....these cannons are being used by the 170 yard + guys.....and to be honest unless your timing is spot on your leads will be flying all over the place!!

Why??????

Got to say this is a load of rubbish.

Insulation tape on a fishing rod will stay there as long as you want it too. It is common practice to use it to tape on bike inner tubes to stop spool slip on multipliers.

A lot of the casting guys also use bread tape to affix the eyes to their rods (for lightness while casting) but can't help themselves from taking the rod down the beach for a flap about and bit of fishing...no problems

you might have a bit of a problem on dirty wet rod handle foam....but then its in the preperation...don't put it on something wet!!

Re: casting aid

thanks for all the imput guys, was gonna fit to the handle with shrink tube once location on the rod found, tape is only a suggestion for prelimenary siting.

it would appear from the info, john that the release trigger is the same timing as using your finger, it just holds the line, until you release the pressure off the trigger, also you can still have a lighter drag setting on the spool, with 3/4 turns around the capstan, instead of having to keep altering the setting every cast, without any finger burn from line slippage

just a few of the advantages i can see.

Re: casting aid

Chris i don't know why you ask questions on here??? or are you just curious from the inain ebay trawling!!!!

i've been out and asked one of the guys who is a top flight fixed spool caster and told you his advice.

to say again...your timing has to be spot on with a canon...go buy it and use it.

as for unloading the drag...are you serious????? all fixed spool casting is to have it as tight as you can get it or by "power casting" your drag will slip during the cast sending your lead to the right if you are right handed.

ask a question...get an answer....you obviously want to buy it so why ask about it.....sorry the information given to you wasn't what you wanted to hear.............

Re: casting aid

john in my original thread i was asking what was the downside of them, please reread. as for the answers i have received, it would appear timing is the only one, so thank you for your response.
