I've decided that, as good as modern tackle is, I'm going retro - a 484 Atlantic paired with a 1970's 9000C - perfect!
its an absolute classic rod...capable of hitting 200 yards, with a tip thats for fishing!!!!!

you've found the best person for them...i know he even has had a couple rebuilt and they are mint!!!

Ooooooo sounds fab , be even better with an original red 9000 with the tear drop handle ( brass side plates), that was my first ABU rod and reel combo i worked for months to get the cash to buy that set up.....a long time ago too.

Re: Replacement vintage rod rings

Well.... I have already got two 9000C's, my original purchased in 1978 for my 18th birthday, another that I bought a few years later in Northern Ireland, both have the brass side plates and the tear-drop handles but have the black finish (which I actually prefer - I've never been a big fan of ABU's red). I've just bought a rather nice, almost mint 10000CA which I also intend to use from the beach.... So, it's just a really nice cork handled 484, as close to original condition and fittings as possible!

Re: Replacement vintage rod rings

Willy..... I am soooooo sorely tempted to have a couple of those from you!....

As a footnote to this thread, can anyone answer a question for me? I've been buying ABU tackle since the early 1970's, then, I think it was around the mid eighties, their tackle started to appear branded as 'ABU Garcia' as it still is today... I always thought that the new branding only kicked in during the eighties, but if this is the case, how is it that I often see really early Ambassadeurs for sale in their original boxes, some from what look like the 50's and 60's, branded as ABU Garcia?

Re: Replacement vintage rod rings

Hi Alain..... Thanks for that. I still think it's a bit strange that some really old vintage ABU's are branded as ABU Garcia though.... I've recently returned to angling, serious angling at any rate, very recently after a break of well over 30 years and thank gawd I kept virtually all of my old gear! I have recently bought a smaller Ambassadeur, a 6600 C4, which has Made in Sweden on the sideplate and, to be fair, is a lovely bit of kit... I think, like most people here, that I have an aversion to anything with Made in China stamped on it!

Re: Replacement vintage rod rings

Some of the misunderstanding will more than likely be by ebay sellers.

I think i've seen old ABU reels on ebay described as ABU Garcia & pretty sure it's just a slip of the tongue in many cases.
