'Cheap' multiplier choice

Hiya all

Looking for a little advice off anyone who has first hand knowledge of these two:
Okuma Magnetix or Grays G-Mag six
My lad has followed his dad and is coarse fishing mad and always has been (he's nearly 15) but I have done some beach fishing before and as we live by the coast (Fylde) the lad wants to do a bit while the coarse fishing is quiet during the winter. I got him a beachcaster and fixed spool from fleabay and its done okay and he's caught fish but obviously being a cheapo, it is what it is! He's had a few chucks out with my rod that has a 6500 on it and he's handled it well and I think its time to progress him to a multiplier and decent rod. His Xmas pressie is already bought <laptop> so he's not expecting anything else but I'm gonna break the bank (and the mrs will break my face!) and get him something extra for doing so well at school recently. He's had a few problems but really sorted himself out and knuckled down recently. I'm getting him the shakespeare salt 12 ft rod as I've read great things about it and one of the above multipliers. I know the extra spent on an ABU or Daiwa will be better long term but the budget really is stretched and I can't go more than 70 for the reel. I have also read good things of the Talon real seat - worth it or no?
Thanks in antisipation!

Greys G Mag is good value @59.99 in |Glasgow angling ....http://www.fishingmegastore.com/grey...-six~3546.html

I`d leave the okuma alone ,they are garbage ,and dont last too long ...

Re: 'Cheap' multiplier choice

don't get okuma....saying that i'm sure you'll get a recomendation or 2!!!

a really under rated reel that feels slightly agricultural but does cast well and is tougher than a abu 6500 but the same size is the greys g mag 6 .....they never really took .

if you check out veals web site they have them on special for £60...which is a steal

another would be a sl20sha but they are slightly over budget and you do need big hands as they stand off the rod quite a bit and the gear box can get in the way of where you want to hold the rod.

Really? My old man has an Okuma baitrunner and it seems great quality but perhaps its from the higher end of thier market...

Chris, I know what you are saying about the SH quality reels but my lad has had very little new gear of his own, its all been passed down from either myself or his grandad. I wanted something brand new for him to feel he owns and not someones cast off (if you excuse the very apt pun!) I'd be well happy with a SH ABU but you know how teenagers think - or perhaps you don't know - which is no bad thing to be honest! LOL

Yea, I spied the G-Mag at Veals. I considered the SLOSH as the extra cash would be ofset by not having to get coasters / Talon...

You all seem pretty unanimus about the okuma, Looking like the Grays at this rate

Re: 'Cheap' multiplier choice

yep i know what you mean about youngsters, but if you ask them, as adults what they would prefer, you might just be amazed at their response, always talked to mine that way, now the g/kids as well, most adults under estimate their intelligence, they are certainly wiser than when we were kids.

Re: 'Cheap' multiplier choice

Okuma fixed spoils are a good bit of kit....unfortunately their multipliers don't cut the mustard
