Irresponsible anglers

I've just spent a most enjoyable morning fishing from one of Torquay's piers. The sun was out, the tide was coming in and the sea was virtually flat calm. What a beautiful morning!

Regretably marred by the fact that, whilst I was there, I saw two small wading birds (Dunlin I think) foraging along the pier. They were noticeable by the fact that each was only walking on what appeared to be a single leg but on closer inspection the other leg on each bird was tucked right up under it's body. I only knew where the legs were due to quite visible clumps of mixed colour monofilament line. One of these poor birds also had hooks tangled in amongst the mono. There were a few juvenile Great Black Backed gulls also on the pier and I'm certain that these disabled birds will end up as lunch! (yes, I know that GBBG along with the others of their family predate the smaller seabirds but at least give the poor sods a fighting chance of survival!)

Why do we, as anglers - supposed custodians of the sea shore, still throw our waste away where it will harm the local wildlife? We are supposed to be coming around to the notion that catch and release is a good thing, yet we harm the other wildlife without a moments thought!

Oh.... and I do hope it wasn't a night/early morning angler that took their dog with them and allowed it to dump a huge pile that had been spread across 60% of the piers width... It's really not on!

Steve

Fair enough but I've seen plenty of UK anglers behave irresponsibly too. Case in point being a minority of carp anglers who see an overnight session as an outdoor rave and piss-up leaving the side of the lake look like Glastonbury has just happened when they leave the next morning. Seen it many times in the past.

Sorry mate, it's just that these threads tend to bring out the usual thinly veiled racism in some people, not that I'm saying that's true in your case.

Re: Irresponsible anglers

The problem is leading a sentence with the line "I saw a Polish/Chinese/Immigrant......." people dont start simular sentences with "I saw a english/white/uk"

If you define the persons nationality in the opening sentence then you are opening yourself up to the "racist" tag even if your not. I get what you guys are saying and I also agree that it is a problem but the way things are worded are usually the problem. It takes the emphasis of what the did wrong and replaces it with where they come from.

As for the litter louts, there is no educating some people, you would most likely get abuse if you tried. These are most likely the same people that would piss in the street, throw litter out their car windows, not clean up after their dogs, shout and swear in the street ect ect ect. Its an unfortunate lower level of our society that only thinks about themselves and talk about getting respect whilst offering the exact opposite to everyone in return. Untill the councils, clubs crack down hard on these idiots it will continue to happen. Round where i live, due to the budget cuts, they have suddenly got troops of civil enforcement officers walking around the streets, fining everybody who drops fag butts and litter. The result is..........Cleaner streets. Its simple really but how it could be upheld along the beach is the million dollar question.

Tight Lines

Re: Irresponsible anglers

so if a policeman ect asked you what nationality where the people causing the trouble at the time would you not say,,little tip for the pc brigade in this country it has never seen real racism only what we are told to beleave is racism ,,as a jazz sax player i have a lot of afro carribean friends who play sax with me from time to time ,,i was invited to visit ones family in queens in america for people who have been there you will know the place well ,black people are frequently stopped and searched ect and there is always that deep south sentiment towards imigrants racism you have never seen here ,,,makes me sick hearing people in the uk the most diverse nation in the world going on about racism and feeding it into every walk of life, it has had a reverse effect on the way we see people from other ethnic backgrounds not for the better i hasten to add hence the bnp the edl and variouse other groups who incidently are on the rise ,,,if i say i saw a chinese japanese or hungarian making a mess ect then im in my rights to as it is describing what i see at the time ,i live in handsworth birmingham (where the riots were ) and if there is trouble i always ask are they black or white causing it ,and it never got me in trouble yet with either side ,describing a persons origin for good or bad is not racist only the pc brigade would have you beleave that as lawyers make a great deal of money from cases of supposed racism ,,my wifes family were irish migrants and dont mind being called paddys its only the pc brigade that have the problem but then again everyone has thier own agenda..sorry for rant but its ridiculous to not be able to say what you see respectfully for fear of being tagged and labeled ,,,oh by the way most asian and afro caribeans in bham say the pc brigade cause them more trouble than good ....i hope no one takes offence

ps blue if you were in france you wouldnt hear a french white man ect but if the french man was in the uk you would here ,he was white french ,,,place of origin determins how we describe people mate thats a fact as the uk is historicly white people
