| Baitcaster Reels Evening All, been browsing flea bay in an attempt to hunt down a not too expensive 7HT or alike mulitplyer to upgrade onto, and have seen these slimline bait caster type reels. Was wondering if anyone had and advice on these? whether they are better than fixed spools etc as i thought about getting one of these aswell as a multiplyer to accompany my spinning rod, as they are light weight and compact? Are they worth a go for spinning/light beach work or shall i just stick to the fixed spools? Any advice much appreciated. Mark ![]() |

| Re: Baitcaster Reels I use one with 20lb braid for salt water spinning. I like it because it doesnt get wind knots. Get one with a metal frame if you can. I had an abu silvermax to start with but the plastic frame was flimsy and not tough enough. I got a Daiwa exceller off ebay for £50 and its been very good. I use plugs at about 13g and wedges up to 60g and have found it more than capable. I have yet to have a bad birds nest or crack off. I got a left hand wind one so I dont have to swap the rod from one hand to the other after every cast. You need a baitcaster rod to go with it though as most spinning rods are rung for fixed spool. The rovex lure pro rods are rung for both. I have the 10foot one, again its been ideal. All the best. | Re: Baitcaster Reels When you use a multiplier the reel sits ontop of the rod so the line runs through the rings with the rings on top of the rod, when the rod bends you need more rings closer together to keep the line off the rod blank. Also as the line runs straight off a multiplier spool the rings are smaller. A fixed spool comes off in loops so a fixed spool rod has bigger and fewer rings to prevent friction. Hope that makes sense. A baitcaster rod normally has a trigger grip. | Re: Baitcaster Reels I was going to weigh in on this and get all technical but everything I was gonna say has already been said by dovorian and I don't feel like rehashing. I use a baitcaster for most of my freshwater pursuits of catfish and black bass (which most years is 97% of my fishing) and prefer it unless I'm intentionally going with light freshwater tactics. I am in fact looking for a second low-profile baitcaster for a rod Bentley traded me in exchange for fixing a broken reel. Of the group of guys I fish with, Tóño the Mexican and Redneck Wayne prefer a spinning (fixed-spool) outfit, while Bentley, Normus, Bearded Alex, Freeman, and I all prefer a low-profile baitcaster for the reasons and applications already mentioned by Jason and myself. __________________ 2012 species: 13 All-time species: 65 New species caught in 2012: white sucker, popeye shiner, white shiner |
