Re: tapered leaders

also in my opinion a complete waste of money unless you are trying to add 10 yards to a 200 yard cast !

Re: tapered leaders

disagree Mike and s&m im no expert and can only say what i have found ,i use tapered leaders when you think about it ,tying 50lb line to 15 pound line creates a big step and regardless off your favored knot will catch on rings spool lip and also in my opinion cause a weak spot where you have that step, in a tapered leader it is usualy 16lb to my 15 lb main much smoother smaller knot , i use them on my distance carp rigs and the difference is a smoother pay out of line ,,,i changed over to taperd leaders on my multiplier and the difference is a smoother better cast and i can no longer hear the knot rattling over the rings only my oppinion though ,look how standard shock leader knot sitts on a multy like a wart on ya nose lol,,,,i also use taperd fly leaders the fly turnover is a lot better,,only my personal choice this though.

i use these never had prob 5 on a spool

Re: tapered leaders

I`m sure tapered leaders might be bit better for casting "Egg Whisks" ,as the knot rubs over the spool, but for multipliers a properly tied leader knot is compact ,and shouldn`t cause a problem .The ring rattle you get sometimes might cost you a yard or two at most ,the gain in yards aint worth the cost of the tapered leaders .

Also if your playing decent fish you need to know the leader is strong , not have to guess which part of the tapered bit your playing with ,and chance loosing a good fish close in the weed or rocks.

Dunno about pond fishing or flies, i`m sure there may be a good use for them there...

completely agree Mike .. the rattle you heart is ALWAYS from someone who has tied a big knot .. i will bet my life that the knot i use to tie 60lb ultima to 15 or 18 lb F1 is smaller than any tapered knot
tapered leaders for flies i agree with but ive yet to see a 6 oz fly ..

Re: tapered leaders

I much prefer tapered leaders as the small knot pulls in less weed, but that guy has got to be joking if he thinks I'm paying £200 for them

Re: tapered leaders

Havent looked at the item in question but just a word of caution:

My mate Gary and I were on the chesil a few weeks ago and Gary who was using matching rods and reels was struggling to get any distance on one of his rods. The only notable difference between his set ups was a Korda tapered leader on one rod and another tapered on the other. Upon inspection we found that there was an "elastic type stretch" in the Korda leader which was absorbing some of the power in the cast and dampening it right down. When the leader was changed for one to match the other rod the distance in performance was amazing and we're talking about an increase of 25 yards at least.
Food for thought.

Re: tapered leaders

mike s and m i see what your saying i guess its each to his own ive never lost a fish through a broken taperd leader ,,,scots nowt wrong with my knots ive tried them all, how can a knot tied 15 to 60 lb be possibly smaller than a knott tied 15 to 16 lb thats impossible as the diameter of the thicker line will dictate the size of knot ,,or am i missing something here ,,i think it creates a step and the taperd leader a much smoother transfere from line to leader
