Carp rods for sea fishing

Here's a question which those who do both coarse and sea fishing will be able to answer with ease. Is there any easy rule of thumb that equates the test curve figures quoted for carp rods, and the lead casting weight given on sea rods? I ask this because I want to know how much lead a carp rod with a 3lb test curve can cast? Kind regards to all.

Re: Carp rods for sea fishing

I use a 2 1/2 lb test curve for mullet fishing ,i recon upto about 3 oz would be ok on that , a 3lb might lob a 4oz i would imagine .....i`m sure the freshwater boys will be able to give a more accurate idea tho

well consider what the carp boys lob out, when they use a spod, they use 3lb t/cs for that, each rod would have it's own character, best to go with trial and error, take it down the beach and try it, start small say 2oz and work up, see how it handles, what are you going to target with it ?

Hi Chris, I mostly fish the Thames, so my likely catches would be schoolies, whiting, flatties and small eels. Nothing of any rod wrenching size (unfortunately). Kind regards.

Re: Carp rods for sea fishing

i cant see you having any problems with that, rods of that calibre handle large carp, the only thing to think about is freshwater rods aren't kitted out for salt, just need to rinse well under the tap after use.

good sport on light tackle, used to fish a creek, for flatties with a heavy match rod, 1/2 oz lead 5lb line,

have fun

Re: Carp rods for sea fishing

I use 2.5lb carp rods for float fishing at Samphire Hoe,they work well with big sea floats and cast 3oz without problem.

What they don't like is hauling in a full six string of Mackeral

John if you're using carp gear at Greenhithe will you not have a problem holding the bottom in the tide - or are you wanting to roll a light weight along the mud to search for the Flounder?

Thanks Mike, Chris and Bill. Yes, Bill you are absolutely right; light line and tackle should give good sport on that rod. Assuming I catch something of course. Kind regards to all.

Be positive mate! When you catch! I use two carp rods for flattie bashing with 1-3oz on them depending on tide/conditions. I go even lighter when using moving bait with spoons/beads

Re: Carp rods for sea fishing

@chrisoldgit spod rods are 5lb test mate 3 would break eventualy ,,i brought this thread up ages ago dadwood i asked same question but forgot to put my findings up ,,i had two spare jrc 3lb test for piking and bag work as not to ruin my main rods ,,,,,i took them to the beach with a friend who had no rods for bass fishing with a squid bait we were lobbing 3oz leads i also tried a 4oz and it was fine though we were in bass territory not in the horizon on casts,,,result great day fishing dabs schoolies and you can feel the fish ,,,weather was not windy so cant tell you what bite detection would be like in a wind ,,but the bites do wrap round better than a beach caster close in and possibly better than my bass rod ,,,sum up id use them again as it was fun,,,if i wanted a carp sea rod i would err on the 3.5 test rods though if you can get a couple cheap for that punch

Re: Carp rods for sea fishing

Hi mate I used a 3oz lead on a carp rod at Gravesend but 1 problem I didnt acount for is getting the lead back out of the mud!!!!!! It cast ok but when I went to reel in the lead was stuck in the thick mud and the rod just didn`t have the backbone to pull it back out so bear this in mind before you rely on a carp rod in the Thames!!!
