Joe, that's a very good point you raise. On really high springs I've had to use 5oz breakaway leads at the Ship and Lobster to hold the bottom. The softness of the mud down there varies tremendously over just a few yards. If you're unlucky enough to cast to a really soft area, getting the lead back is extremely difficult. Kind regards. Incidentally, I've not yet bought a multiplier and will let you know when I do.

never gave the mud a thought blue as i fish cardigan alot the beaches are sandy could u not use flat leads ? llike in carp fishing over silt ,,also i have come a cross a few bass rods that arnt much different in action to a good carp rod north western did one
if your looking for a cheap light rod with a bit of back bone have a look at the fladen eco lite ive got one chucks and retrives 5oz leads ok and ive had the odd ray on it its 11"
