Bait costs!

I was sitting in the garden with me tortoise this afternoon, when I got to thinking about the cost of bait! (I don't recommend you do that.)
Anyway, compared with many lads on this forum, I fish infrequently (about half a dozen times each month). Nevertheless, I probably spend about £15 on bait each time I go out. So, six times a month equates to 72 sessions each year. And at £15 a session, that amounts to around £1100 a year! Now, I know that this is a paltry sum compared with what some of the lads spend when they do their 24 hour sessions, but it just shows you how these costs mount up.
Shhhhhh, don't tell her indoors......I can hardly tell her I won the bait at a raffle. lol
Kind regards to all.

That's a scary amount of money mate. I try not to think about it as it would get me depressed

Re: Bait costs!

I fish 2-3 times a week ,so i dread to think how much i spend , good job i have a very good friend with a trade account with Ammo (bulk purchase mackerel ,bluey razors ), bulk buy 5lb boxes of squid for a fiver and split em down ,which saves a fortune, just found a good live crab supplier on the net too ,so that save s a fair bit buying peelers in bulk and freezeing em down.

Even then i dont think about it too much.

The freezer is full with bait tho ,no room for food

Any left over lug gets salted down and used for another day , and have perfected keeping the live stuff going for a week or so in the fridge, farmed rag doesnt keep well tho ,might try salting that down next ..

That's interesting Mike, are you saying that you can keep lug alive for up to a week? I can't. I rewrap them twice a day, but they seldom survive more than two days. And that's lug dug from the shore, not farmed stuff.

Yes , in the fridge set @ 3 degrees , they keep for upto and beyond a week .I use the bait trays that you buy for the Shakespeare boxes

It involves a little fiddling around ,and goes something like this .....

Comes home from the shop wrapped in newspaper , sort the good undamaged worms ,and place then in about an inch of sea water ,in the tray in the fridge , check them daily ,remove any ones that are going squidgy ,or have blown ( keep them seperate in newspaper ,or salt them down) First day ,change the water twice ,then after that daily ,and you can get at least a week . Saves binning them ,and any that die can be salted down and frozen for another day .....

However i only live 5 mins from the sea ,so fresh sea water isn`t a problem .. another down is they pong a bit in the fridge ..

Re: Bait costs!

Bait is expensive for what it is!
like eveything in fishing, I reckon they must add at least 10% onto anything related to fishing!
First thing Im going to buy once i can legally drive the misses car/future tackle wagon is a bait pump!
If I started to keep week old lug in the fridge I think the cost might be the least of my problems if the misses found it!
All the best
Jason

Already got that sorted! I ditched my fridge when fishypaul gave me a freezer as it diddnt get much use. I have a little beer fridge I can use for worms in the kitchen. I normally use them straight away though. I only live 5 min from the bait shops.

Re: Bait costs!

It can be pricey, I imagine the sea side of things is what it is if you buy the bait but I guess if you go to extremes you can get it free if you put the work in.

I recently found a company called Ace Baits who do some really really cheap base mixes for boilies. I use nutrabaits flavours and the cheaper nut mix by ace and the fish are stacking up, think 10k of the nut mix which is quite coarse with nuts and seeds costs £20...

Need to find cheaper eggs now lol

I dont stack bait in though, prob get through a kilo in a full day session.
