Ugly Stick

Hi all

Thinking of buying one of the ugly stick light spinning rods 8/9ft for using with my heavier plugs and spinners 15-40g approx. Looking for a tippy rod that's not too heavy for longer sessions.
I dont know anyone who has one and none in the local tackle shops so was wondering if anyone on the forum is using or has used one before and what your opinion would be on this.
Probably be using either 10lb quality mono or 20lb braid depending on venue and conditions.

Thanks in advance for any info.

MNG is on a distinguished road
Re: Ugly Stick

I can give you a little thought on the quality as I have a 30lbs boat road, I love it to be honest. The quality and presentation of the rod is outstanding, possibly one of the best rods I've bought. Very strong, very flexible. Quality fuji guides, reel holster and very light weight.

I am actually also interested in buying the spinning rod so will keep an eye on the topic.

I'd feel confident buying another Ugly Stick though.

Mark

Re: Ugly Stick

Been looking online today and thinking i might got for the 10ft version, i,m using a shakespeare 9ft tetra spin 10-30g at the mo but feel it's just a bit short and needs a bit more guts to bully some fish out the weed.
Probably take both rods when i do go out and use the tetra for lighter work on clean ground.
Bought a salt mpv a couple of months back but it,s way to stiff so might just sell that.

Re: Ugly Stick

Hi Steve
I have been using a Rovex lure pro the 10ft one for £35 its well worth the money. Its not tippy thogh definetly thorough action. But handled a 2.5lb bass with no trouble. Its rated 30-60 grams but I have cast 2oz and its more at home with 1oz. It casts those stonefisher lures as good as my lighter 15-40g ron thompson rod.
All the best.
Jason

Re: Ugly Stick

I had a look at those Jason and they do look pretty good but i just cant get on with through action rods just find them a bit floppy on the cast.
Got a 10ft spinning rod through action with no brand name or anything on it i bought at a boot sale for a tenner in mint condition gathering dust in the cupboard, seemed like a good idea at the time but just cant get used to the action.
Also had a look at the Mitchell mag pro range around £50 and the the ugly stick is only a couple of quid more.
I would really like to have a look before i buy, dont want to get any more ornaments for the fishing cupboard lol!
I dont doubt the ugly stick will be a good bit of kit i just want to make sure it's gonna be right for the job.
Might ring around and see if there's a tackle shop within a reasonable distance so i can go and have a gander at it, they might even let me have a few chucks up the street with it lol!
That way i could check out more goodies in the shop

Yeah, Sorry to keep jumping from imperial to metric! I know 28g is an oz. i was trying to say the rod is over rated. I think 60g is too much, it slows the cast right down.
