Protecting large rod rings during travel.

Can anyone give me some advice please? My Fox rod is rung for fixed spool reel and has a very large stand-off butt ring which sticks out 4" from the rod. How can I stop it getting damaged while taking it to the beach. I could of course put it in a rigid rod tube but when I'm only taking one rod and a spike type rest, it's a bit heavy and cumbersome. Is there some sort of rigid clip that can be put around the ring to stop it getting knocked? As always, any advice would be much appreciated. Kind regards to all.

The best solution would be to replace it with a fold down version.

Thanks LittleFish, that sounds like the solution. I'm just a bit reluctant to start cutting away the existing high build and whippings because they are of really good quality. But I guess that's what I'll have to do.

Re: Protecting large rod rings during travel.

You could try going to b and q or another diy shop , they have a sponge like material that is used for pipe lagging [ i think ], that is split down one side , you buy the length you want , and this should fit over rod and ring to save any drastic cutting up of your rod.....mac

aye, sounds like an easy fix for me

only thing im concerned with is the diameter the pipe lagging might not go round the blank AND cover the eye ..
how about cutting down summit like a pringles tube or similar ??

otherwise i know telescopics come with a plastic sheath on the end - i wonder if you could doctor one of those if yo ucan find one ?
